Beauvais Cathedral stands on a religious site with Carolingian roots from the 9th century. Construction of the current Gothic structure began in 1225, on the initiative of Bishop Milo de Nanteuil, with the goal of creating the highest choir ever conceived for a Christian cathedral. Work progressed in stages: the choir was completed around 1272, after an interruption between 1232 and 1238 caused by a funding crisis stemming from tensions with King Louis IX. In 1284, part of the choir vaults collapsed, forcing structural reinforcements that delayed the project for decades. During the 16th century, the transept arms were built under the direction of architect Martin Chambiges, and in 1569 a lantern tower 153 meters high was completed, which was for a brief period the tallest structure in the world. On April 30, 1573, Ascension Day, the tower and part of the transept vaults collapsed again. This second collapse definitively ended plans to build the central nave, leaving the building incomplete to this day. In 1840 it was declared a Monument Historique de France.

The building belongs to French Gothic in its three chronological variants. The choir, erected in the 13th century, uses sexpartite vaults that reach 48 meters in interior height, the highest ever achieved in a Gothic cathedral. The seven radial chapels of the apse are arranged around the ambulatory with great geometric precision. The transept arms, designed by Martin Chambiges in the 16th century, exhibit façades in the Flamboyant Gothic style with 11-meter diameter rose windows and elaborate sculptural ornamentation. The dominant material is local limestone. The absence of a central nave—never built—makes the complex an architecturally singular structure: the choir and transept are the only permanent covered spaces. Flying buttresses reinforced with iron rods—replaced by steel in the 20th century—support the perimeter walls of the choir. The cathedral also houses an astronomical clock installed between 1865 and 1868, composed of approximately 90,000 parts and 52 dials, one of the most complex clockwork mechanisms of the 19th century. The 16th-century stained glass windows, some attributed to the local artist Engrand Le Prince, depict biblical scenes and saintly figures.
