About Catedral San Marcos
📜 History
The history of the Cathedral of San Marcos is marked by tragedy and reconstruction. The original church that stood in Arica was destroyed by the 1868 earthquake, after having remained standing for 226 years. To replace it, Peruvian president José Balta commissioned the workshops of Gustave Eiffel to design a new metal structure. The work arrived from France in 1875 and was inaugurated in 1876, becoming a landmark in the city's history. In 1880, during the War of the Pacific, Arica came under Chilean control, and in 1884 the Treaty of Ancón formalized its Chilean administration. In 1910, the Peruvian parish priest was expelled by Chilean intendant Máximo Lira, an episode that reflects the tensions of the postwar period. In 1959, Pope John XXIII established the Prelatura nullius of Arica, and in 1986 Pope John Paul II created the Diocese of Arica, elevating the temple to cathedral rank. In 1984 it was declared a National Monument of Chile. An earthquake in 2014 damaged the cathedral's cross, and between 2015 and 2017 the building underwent a comprehensive restoration during which it remained closed to the public for seventeen months.
🏛️ Architecture
The Cathedral of San Marcos is a structure of neo-Gothic style designed by the workshops of Gustave Eiffel, the same French engineer who would later build the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The building is distinguished by being entirely metallic: its walls and structural elements are made of cast iron and puddled iron, an industrial technique characteristic of the 19th century. The only exceptions to this metallic materiality are its two wooden doors. The Gothic inspiration is evident in the verticality of the ensemble, in its pointed arches, and in the general composition of the facade, which recalls medieval European religious architecture adapted to the industrial procedures of the time. The building was prefabricated in France, transported in parts to the port of Arica, and assembled on site, constituting an early example of large-scale prefabricated construction in South America. The cathedral is located at 170 Bolognesi Street, in the historic center of Arica, and its coordinates place it at 18°28′44″S 70°19′15″W. The inscription on its bell dates from August 5, 2002, within the registry of assets that make up the National Monument.
⭐ Key Facts
The Cathedral of San Marcos occupies a central place in the religious and cultural life of Arica. It is the seat of the Diocese of Arica, created in 1986 by Pope John Paul II, and hosts the most important liturgical celebrations of the Arica and Parinacota region. Its patron saint is Saint Mark the Evangelist, whose feast day is celebrated on April 25, a date that coincides with the Spanish founding of the city, reinforcing the link between local identity and religious devotion. In 1984, the State of Chile declared it a National Monument, recognizing both its historical value and its architectural uniqueness as a work of Eiffel's engineering on Latin American soil. The building attracts visitors interested in the region's history, the period of the War of the Pacific, and 19th-century iron architecture. The cathedral remains open to the public in the morning, from 8:30 to 14:00, and in the evenings, from 18:00 to 22:00, allowing both faithful and travelers touring northern Chile to integrate a visit.
The Cathedral of San Marcos is a concrete testament to the history of Arica: built in iron and assembled piece by piece after the 1868 earthquake, it has survived wars, changes of sovereignty, and new earthquakes. Those who approach it find a building that concentrates more than a century and a half of community life, faith, and collective memory in the far north of Chile.
