What denominations we cover

The directory organizes churches by denomination so you can find communities aligned with your faith tradition. Here we explain which ones are available and how the classification works.

The 13 denominations in the directory

  1. Catholic — Churches of the Roman Catholic Church, including parishes, chapels, and shrines.
  2. Baptist — Congregations from the various Baptist conventions and associations.
  3. Pentecostal — Churches that emphasize the gifts of the Spirit, including the Assemblies of God and related groups.
  4. Adventist — Churches of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
  5. Methodist — Congregations from the various branches of the Methodist and Wesleyan tradition.
  6. Presbyterian — Churches with Presbyterian governance and a Reformed tradition.
  7. Anglican — Churches of the Anglican Communion and Episcopal traditions.
  8. Lutheran — Congregations of the Lutheran tradition.
  9. Orthodox — Churches of the various Eastern Orthodox traditions.
  10. Quaker — Meetings of the Religious Society of Friends.
  11. Evangelical — A broad category for evangelical-style churches that don't fit a specific denomination on the list.
  12. Jehovah's Witnesses — Congregations (kingdom halls) of Jehovah's Witnesses.
  13. Latter-day Saints — Congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

How a denomination is assigned

When someone adds a church, they choose the denomination from the dropdown menu. If the church is already in the directory, the denomination was assigned by whoever registered it or by the EncuentraIglesias team during review.

If you think the denomination is incorrectly assigned, you can suggest a change using the "Suggest correction" button on the listing. See /en/help/articulo/iglesias/editar-iglesia for the procedure.

If your church doesn't fit any category

Not every congregation fits neatly into a denomination. In those cases, here are the options:

  • Evangelical is the broadest category and serves as an umbrella for independent, charismatic, non-denominational, and many other churches without a clear denominational label.
  • If the church has a specific denomination not on the list, select "Evangelical" when adding it and mention the denomination in the listing description. For example: "Mennonite church, classified here as Evangelical."
  • If you think an important denomination is missing from the list, write to us from /contact. We periodically review the directory's taxonomy.

Does denomination affect search results?

Yes. The denomination filter in /advanced-search uses this field directly. That's why it's worth assigning it correctly when adding or correcting a listing.
