About Königreichssaal

📖 About this Christian tradition

Jehovah's Witnesses are a Christian community of international reach whose roots go back to the Bible Students movement, which arose at the end of the nineteenth century in Pennsylvania, in the United States, around the figure of Charles Taze Russell. In 1931, under the leadership of Joseph Franklin Rutherford, the community formally adopted the name by which it is known today, drawn from Isaiah 43:10. It is now estimated to gather several million members in more than two hundred countries, organized in local congregations that meet in what they call Kingdom Halls.

One of the most distinctive features of their faith is the emphasis on the divine name Jehovah, an English form of the Hebrew Tetragrammaton (YHWH), restored in their own version of the Scriptures: the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures. Their understanding of God differs from classical Christian Trinitarianism: they regard Jesus as the only-begotten Son and the first being created by the Father, and the holy spirit as God's active force rather than a divine person.

The central hope of Jehovah's Witnesses is the establishment of the Kingdom of God on earth, announced by Jesus as a literal reality: a new heaven and a new earth where 144,000 anointed ones will reign with Christ in heaven and a great crowd will enjoy life in a restored earthly paradise. From this conviction comes the community's most publicly recognized feature: door-to-door preaching, understood as a biblical commandment and as a daily expression of their faith.

🕯️ Feast days, calendar and devotions

The calendar of Jehovah's Witnesses differs notably from that of most Christian traditions. Based on their reading of the Scriptures, they do not celebrate Christmas or Easter as observed in other churches, nor personal birthdays, national holidays or other festivities of civil or religious origin. This stance, held with respect toward those who think differently, is understood by the community as a way of preserving worship free of elements that, in their view, lack direct biblical foundation.

The only annual religious observance they keep is the Memorial of Christ's Death, also called the Lord's Evening Meal, which takes place after sundown on Nisan 14 according to the Jewish calendar. On that night, congregations around the world meet to hear a Bible-based talk and to remember the sacrifice of Christ through unleavened bread and wine, symbols passed among those present. It is the most significant date of the year for the community and typically draws many guests.

⛪ How to prepare for a visit

Kingdom Halls welcome with simplicity those who wish to see how Jehovah's Witnesses gather. Congregations usually hold two meetings each week: one on a weekday, dedicated to the Our Christian Life and Ministry program, focused on Bible reading and preparation for the ministry; and one on the weekend, which combines a public Bible-based talk with a study of an article from The Watchtower magazine. Each meeting lasts about an hour and is usually announced on the hall's notice board or at jw.org.

Dress is customarily formal but unostentatious: many attendees come in a suit, skirt or office attire, as a sign of respect for the time of worship. There are no collections during the meetings; contributions are voluntary and are placed discreetly in boxes installed in the hall. Anyone, whether a Jehovah's Witness or not, may attend freely, sit anywhere and follow the program with no obligation to participate. If you arrive with questions, the hosts or any publisher will be happy to guide you and, if you wish, offer you a free Bible course.

❓ Frequently asked questions

What is a Kingdom Hall?

It is the meeting place of one or several Jehovah's Witness congregations. It is not called a church or a temple but a Kingdom Hall, in reference to the Kingdom of God that stands at the center of their preaching. The two weekly meetings, the annual Memorial and various Bible courses open to the public are held there.

Why don't Jehovah's Witnesses celebrate Christmas, birthdays or Easter?

Based on their study of the Bible, they consider that these celebrations were not observed by Jesus or by the early Christians, and that some of them have origins outside biblical teaching. For that reason they prefer not to take part in them. It is a personal and communal theological decision that they live alongside relatives and neighbors who do celebrate them, with mutual respect.

Can anyone attend the meetings?

Yes. The meetings are public and free, and anyone interested can come without belonging to the community. No personal information is requested at the entrance, there are no collections during the program and no one is required to speak or participate visibly; it is enough to listen and follow the Bible readings.

What does a typical meeting look like?

On a weekday the Our Christian Life and Ministry meeting is held, dedicated to Bible reading, preaching demonstrations and practical counsel for daily faith. On the weekend there is a public Bible-based talk followed by the study of an article from The Watchtower magazine, with questions and answers between the conductor and the audience. Each meeting lasts about an hour and includes songs and prayers.

What is the annual Memorial?

It is the only religious observance that Jehovah's Witnesses keep each year, in remembrance of Christ's death, on the night of Nisan 14 according to the Jewish calendar. A Bible-based talk is given, and unleavened bread and wine are passed around as symbols of the body and blood of Christ. It is a meeting open to the public and, in many places, the most attended of the year.
