About Kölner Dom
📜 History
The construction of the Gothic cathedral of Cologne began in 1248 on the foundations of a previous church, with the purpose of safeguarding the relics of the Three Magi, which were transferred to the city in 1164. The choir was consecrated in 1322, but the works were interrupted at the end of the 15th century when the scaffolding lost funding, leaving the temple unfinished for more than four centuries. The impetus to resume the work came in the context of German Romanticism and the strengthening of national sentiment: on September 4, 1842, the first stone of the resumption was laid. In 1880, after 632 years of intermittent construction, the work was finally completed. Between 1880 and 1884 it was the tallest structure in the world, with its towers reaching 157 meters. During the Second World War it suffered severe structural damage to its towers and lost numerous historic stained glass windows due to bombings, although its main walls withstood. Since then, restoration work has been continuous, also motivated by atmospheric pollution that deteriorates the stone materials.
🏛️ Architecture
The building is a canonical example of High German Gothic, with influences from the cathedral of Amiens in its original design. Its basilica plan measures 144.58 meters in length and 86.25 meters in width; the two twin towers of the western façade reach 157 meters in height, and the interior volume exceeds 407,000 cubic meters. Master Gerhard directed the first works of the choir in the 13th century. In the 19th century, Ernst Friedrich Zwirner supervised the completion of the work following the original medieval plans, with the collaboration of Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The construction materials are mainly three types of local limestone, some especially sensitive to pollution and erosion. The interior preserves the Gero Crucifix, dated around the year 960 and considered the oldest large-format crucifix sculpture north of the Alps. The Shrine of the Magi, begun by Nicolás de Verdún around 1190, is the largest known piece of medieval goldsmithing. The nave features stained glass windows spanning different periods and two large organs built by the Klais firm, installed in 1948 and 1998.
⭐ Key Facts
The Cologne Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne and the most important temple of the Catholic Church in western Germany. The arrival of the relics of the Three Magi in 1164 made it one of the most significant pilgrimage destinations in medieval Europe, comparable in spiritual hierarchy to Santiago de Compostela and Rome. In 1996, UNESCO inscribed it on the World Heritage List under cultural criteria i, ii, and iv, recognizing its value as a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and its influence on subsequent European religious architecture. Between 2004 and 2006 it was included on the List of World Heritage in Danger, due to the visual impact of commercial construction projects in the surrounding area; it was removed from that list after the adoption of urban environment protection measures. It is the most visited monument in Germany. Its trajectory during the Protestant Reformation is also notable: unlike many churches in northern Europe, it remained under Catholic custody throughout that period and maintained its liturgical function without interruption.
The Gothic cathedral of Cologne, with more than seven centuries of history in the heart of the Rhenish city, offers visitors a journey through medieval architecture, religious treasures, and European sacred art. The site hosts daily masses and guided tours that allow viewing the Shrine of the Magi, the Gero Crucifix, and the stained glass windows from different periods. Those who approach Cologne will find in this temple an irreplaceable reference point of Christian history and the continent's cultural heritage.
