Dear brother, dear sister, how many times have you wondered if God has a special purpose for your life? Especially when we think about missions, that restlessness in our hearts can lead us to question: "Is God calling me? Do I need a clear sign to know I should go?"
These questions are more common than we imagine. Many sincere Christians long for specific direction, an unmistakable sign that tells them exactly what to do. But is this how God works in our lives?
The Balance Between Calling and Responsibility
There's an interesting discussion among Christians about how to understand the missionary call. Some argue that we should all prepare to go, unless God clearly prevents us. Others believe we need a specific, personal call to depart.
The truth, as often happens, lies in biblical balance. The apostle Paul teaches us in Romans 12:2 (NIV): "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."
"Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain." (1 Corinthians 15:58, NIV)
The Means God Uses to Guide Us
God doesn't usually speak to us through spectacular signs or audible voices. In his infinite wisdom, he uses gracious and accessible means to direct us:
- God's Word: The Bible is our primary guide. When we read Scripture regularly and prayerfully, our minds are renewed and we begin to understand the principles of God's will.
- Constant Prayer: Intimate dialogue with God draws us closer to him and helps us discern his direction. As Philippians 4:6 (NIV) says: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."
- The Community of Faith: God often speaks through more mature brothers and sisters, pastors, and spiritual leaders who can help us discern our gifts and callings.
- Life Circumstances: Doors that open or close, opportunities that arise, needs we see around us - all these can be part of divine direction.
- The Inner Witness of the Holy Spirit: That sense of peace, that deep conviction born in our spirit when we're aligned with God's will.
Missions: A Mandate for All Christians
It's important to remember that the Great Commission wasn't given only to a chosen few. Jesus told all his disciples: "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19, NIV).
This means every Christian has missionary responsibility, whether going personally, sending and supporting those who go, or praying fervently for those in the mission field. The call to missions isn't an exclusive privilege, but an open invitation to all Christ's followers.
Discerning Your Specific Place
Although we're all called to participate in missionary work, God distributes gifts and opportunities uniquely. Some questions can help in discernment:
- What are my gifts and talents? How can I use them to glorify God among the nations?
- What passions has God placed in my heart? For which people or places do I feel special love?
- What does my faith community perceive in me? Do my spiritual leaders encourage me in this direction?
