About Saint Michael's Cathedral Basilica

📜 History

The Diocese of Toronto was erected in 1841 as a new ecclesiastical circumscription of western Canada. Father Michael Power was designated the first bishop and chose Toronto as the episcopal seat. In 1845 he acquired the necessary land, and on April 7 of that year excavations began. On May 8, 1845, Bishop Power laid the cornerstone and dedicated the cathedral to the Archangel Michael. The construction was largely financed by Irish immigrants residing in the city. Power did not live to see the building completed: he died on October 1, 1847 from typhus, contracted while attending to victims of the Irish famine, and his remains rest in the crypt of the temple. The cathedral was dedicated on August 29, 1848 and consecrated on September 29 of the same year. The bell tower was completed in 1866. Between 2015 and 2016 a comprehensive structural restoration was carried out that kept the building closed for nine months; the temple was reopened on September 29, 2016, the date on which it also received the canonical elevation to a minor basilica.

🏛️ Architecture

The building is a 19th-century interpretation of English Gothic, inspired by the forms of the 14th-century style. It was designed by the architect William Thomas (1799–1860), who designed numerous churches in Toronto. The interior decoration was the responsibility of John Cochrane and Brothers. Built in cream brick with stone details, the cathedral has a capacity for 1,600 people and its interior columns are of maple and oak. The tower reaches 84 meters in height; the bell tower, completed in 1866 by the firm Gundry & Langley, houses two bells. The large stained glass window on the east wall, created in 1858 by the workshop of Étienne Thévenot in France, depicts the Crucifixion. The north and south walls incorporate Austrian and Bavarian stained glass installed between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, made with intensely colored blown glass. In 1880, a three-manual organ manufactured by Warren and Son of Toronto was installed in the choir. During the 2015–2016 restoration, a new organ was installed and an additional balcony was built.

⭐ Key Facts

The cathedral is the main church of the Archdiocese of Toronto, the largest English-speaking Catholic diocese in Canada. It is consecrated to the Archangel Michael, whose liturgical feast is celebrated on September 29, the date chosen both for its consecration in 1848 and for its elevation to a minor basilica in 2016. The building received heritage designation from the Ontario Heritage Trust and was among the 490 properties on the inaugural list of Heritage Toronto in 1973. In September 1984, Pope John Paul II visited the temple during his apostolic journey to Canada. In the crypt rest the remains of Bishop Michael Power, a foundational figure of the diocese whose death in 1847 while attending to typhus patients marked the spiritual identity of Toronto's Catholic community. Since its foundation, the cathedral complex has promoted educational and health institutions: St. Michael's College occupied the rectory between 1852 and 1856, and St. Michael's Hospital was founded in 1892 by the Sisters of St. Joseph to attend to a diphtheria epidemic. The cathedral choir, active since 1926, has offered Christmas concerts since 1939.

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Michael is located at 200 Church Street, in the Garden District neighborhood of downtown Toronto. Its doors are open to those who wish to contemplate the blown glass stained glass windows, the Gothic elements of the interior, and the crypt where the first bishop of the diocese rests. The temple celebrates regular Masses and hosts the liturgical events proper to an active episcopal seat, offering a space for reflection in the heart of one of the most diverse cities on the American continent.
