The history of Liverpool Cathedral begins in 1880, when John Charles Ryle was installed as the first bishop of Liverpool in a diocese that lacked its own cathedral. In 1901, an architectural competition was announced, which received 103 proposals; the winner was Giles Gilbert Scott, an architect of just 22 years. King Edward VII laid the foundation stone on July 19, 1904, initiating a construction project that would last 74 years. The Lady Chapel was the first section completed and was consecrated on June 29, 1910. The main section—choir, ambulatory, chapter house, and sacristies—was consecrated on July 19, 1924 in a ceremony presided over by King George V and Queen Mary. The Lady Chapel suffered damage from German bombings in 1940; the restoration of its stained glass windows was not completed until 1955. Scott laid the final stone in 1942, eighteen years before his death in 1960. The construction of the nave began in 1948. The thanksgiving service marking the culmination of the building took place in October 1978, with the presence of Queen Elizabeth II.

The building follows the 20th-century Gothic Revival style, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott with the initial collaboration of George Frederick Bodley, who died in 1907. Scott was 22 years old when he won the competition in 1903. With an exterior length of 189 meters, it is the longest cathedral in the world. Its central tower reaches 100.8 meters in height; the vault under the tower rises to 53.3 meters and the main nave to 36.5 meters. The total surface area of the building is 9,687 square meters. The main material is red sandstone extracted from the Woolton quarries, south of Liverpool; when those quarries were exhausted, stone from quarries in northwest England was used. The interior stained glass windows total approximately 1,700 square meters and were primarily designed by James Powell and Sons of Whitefriars, London. The pipe organ, built by Henry Willis & Sons, features two five-manual consoles and 10,268 pipes, and is the largest in the United Kingdom. The western facade is presided over by the bronze sculpture 'The Welcoming Christ' (1993), the work of Dame Elisabeth Frink, installed above the main door.
