About Grace Cathedral
📜 History
Grace Cathedral parish was founded in 1849, during the California Gold Rush. The original building was destroyed by the earthquake and fires that devastated San Francisco in 1906. After a provisional installation inaugurated in 1907, the cornerstone of the current cathedral was laid on February 27, 1927, built in four stages between 1928 and 1964. The first services in the central nave and choir were held in 1934, although construction was not completed until March 28, 1964, the date of its official consecration. Throughout this nearly four-decade construction process, the cathedral witnessed urban transformations, the Great Depression, and World War II. On March 28, 1965, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered a sermon inside before approximately five thousand people, constituting the largest gathering in the venue for 36 years, until the September 11, 2001 memorial service. That same year, musicians such as Vince Guaraldi and Duke Ellington performed within its walls.
🏛️ Architecture
The cathedral's original design was conceived by English architect George Frederick Bodley and interpreted and completed by Lewis P. Hobart. The building adopts the French Gothic style, inspired by the great cathedrals of Amiens, Paris, Beauvais, and Chartres. Unlike European medieval constructions, its structure is built in ferroconcrete, allowing it to adapt to California's seismic requirements. The nave measures 329 feet in length and 162 feet in width at the height of the transepts; the central spire rises 247 feet above street level. In terms of its proportions, it is the third largest Episcopal cathedral in the United States. Among its most notable elements are the stained glass windows, which cover 7,290 square feet and represent more than 1,100 figures. The main doors are replicas of Lorenzo Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise, cast from the original Renaissance ones and installed in 1964. The interior houses two labyrinths—one on the floor of the nave and another in the exterior courtyard—three pipe organs, and a carillon of 44 bells cast in 1938 at the Gillett & Johnston foundry and dedicated in 1943.
⭐ Key Facts
Grace Cathedral is the cathedral seat of the Episcopal Diocese of California and one of the religious institutions with the greatest cultural impact in the state. In addition to its liturgical function, the building has been the setting for nationally significant civic and artistic events. The sermon delivered by Martin Luther King Jr. on March 28, 1965, before nearly five thousand people is one of the most documented historical episodes in its history. In later decades, the venue incorporated contemporary artworks, including the altar of the AIDS chapel created by Keith Haring, and David LaChapelle's Our Lady of the Flowers, installed in 2022. The cathedral has appeared in various film productions, including Bullitt (1968), Milk (2008), and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021). In 1957, the Cathedral School for Children was inaugurated inside the bell tower towers. The average Sunday attendance in 2024 was 446 people, with a registered membership of 1,638 parishioners in 2023.
Located atop Nob Hill, the cathedral opens its doors to the public for individual visits and religious services throughout the week. Its Gothic naves, labyrinths, stained glass windows, and repertoire of three pipe organs offer a tour that combines architecture, history, and active liturgical life. The exterior courtyard with its stone labyrinth completes the ensemble as a space of quiet in the heart of San Francisco.
