About Cathédrale Notre-Dame
📜 History
Chartres Cathedral has ancient roots, with the first Christian structures on this site dating from around 360 AD. Successive buildings were erected on the same site and several were destroyed by fires over the centuries. The current Gothic structure was begun in 1194, following a devastating fire on June 10 of that year which destroyed the preceding Romanesque cathedral. Construction progressed in approximately 26 years and the building was consecrated on October 24, 1260. Funding was provided by the Capetian dynasty, local guilds, and various patrons. The Royal Portal, dated between 1145 and 1150, survived the 1194 fire and was incorporated into the new structure. Queen Blanche of Castile donated the north rose window around 1230. Since at least 876, when it received the Sancta Camisia—a relic associated with the Virgin Mary donated by Emperor Charles the Bald—the cathedral has functioned as a pilgrimage destination. In 1862 it was classified as a historical monument, and in 1979 UNESCO inscribed it on the World Heritage List.
🏛️ Architecture
The cathedral is a reference point of classical Gothic and marks the transition toward the developed High Gothic style. Its cruciform plan includes a central nave flanked by side aisles, a double ambulatory around the choir, and two asymmetrical towers on the western facade. The building measures 130 meters in length; the central vault reaches 36 meters in height and the ensemble reaches 113 meters. Among its structural innovations stands out the replacement of the sexpartite vault with a rectangular quadripartite system and the elimination of the tribunes in favor of double flying buttresses, which allowed for the opening of larger surface area windows. Of the 186 original stained glass windows, approximately 152 are preserved, constituting one of the most complete documented medieval collections. The stone labyrinth on the pavement, 13 meters in diameter, dates from around 1205. The Royal Portal (1145-1150) preserves a notable set of sculpted figures. The portal of the north transept, completed around 1270, brings together approximately 700 sculpted pieces. The choir screen was completed with 200 statues by Jehan de Beauce in the early 16th century.
⭐ Key Facts
The cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of Chartres and one of the main centers of Marian pilgrimage in Europe. Since 876 it has safeguarded the Sancta Camisia, a relic considered to be a garment of the Virgin Mary, which attracted pilgrims throughout the Middle Ages and continues to do so. The temple celebrates four main Marian feast days throughout the year. Its inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979 recognized its exceptional architectural and historical value. Since its declaration as a historical monument in 1862, French authorities have overseen its conservation. The cathedral's influence on European Gothic architecture was considerable: its triple portal design, unified interior elevation, and system of double flying buttresses were adopted by builders of later cathedrals in different countries. The crypt, considered the largest in France, preserves foundations from the Roman period and reflects the long continuity of religious use of the site.
Chartres Cathedral, located in the eponymous city in the Centre-Val de Loire region, receives visitors who come to contemplate its medieval stained glass windows, walk the stone labyrinth carved into the pavement, and learn the history of a place of worship with more than sixteen centuries of continuity. The crypt, the sculpted portals, and the relics preserved within offer a direct view of the art and spirituality of medieval Europe.
