About Catedral Primada de Colombia
📜 History
The site where the cathedral stands was the scene of the first mass celebrated in Bogotá on August 6, 1538. Successive religious buildings were erected on this plot throughout the 16th century; in 1562 Pope Pius V granted the seat cathedral status, and on March 12, 1572, construction began on a new cathedral structure designed by Juan de Vergara, which was inaugurated in 1590. An earthquake in 1785 caused serious damage, and in 1805 the building had to be partially demolished due to structural failures. The construction of the current temple, the fourth on that site in the Plaza de Bolívar, began in 1807 according to the neoclassical design of the Franciscan architect Fray Domingo de Petrés; Nicolás León completed the works in 1823, the year the temple was consecrated. In 1902 Pope Leo XIII formally designated it the Primada Cathedral of Colombia. In 1975, through Decree 1584 of August 11, it was declared a National Monument of Colombia.
🏛️ Architecture
The current building, constructed between 1807 and 1823, is of neoclassical style and adopts a basilica Latin cross plan with five naves. The complex covers 5,300 square meters and its towers reach 52 meters in height. The facade features three sculptures carved by Juan de Cabrera representing Saint Peter, Saint Paul, and the Immaculate Conception; the main door measures 7.20 meters high by 3.60 meters wide and is adorned with cast bronze ironwork. Inside, the naves display white-painted vaults with rosette decoration. At the intersection of the transept with the crossing rises a dome with a lantern, decorated in indigo blue with thirteen tongues of fire. The temple houses various chapels, among which stand out the Chapel of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, where the remains of the conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada rest, and the Chapel of Saint James the Apostle, which preserves colonial paintings by Gregorio Vásquez de Arce y Ceballos. The pipe organ, with 4,500 pipes and 58 stops, is the largest in Colombia and was restored between 2013 and 2016.
⭐ Key Facts
The cathedral is the seat of the Archdiocese of Bogotá and, since 1902, holds the title of Primada of Colombia, granted by Pope Leo XIII. It is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. Its location in the Plaza de Bolívar, the historical and civic heart of the capital, places it at the center of Colombian institutional life. In its chapels lie foundational figures of the country's history: the conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, the independence hero General Antonio Nariño, and the colonial painter Gregorio Vásquez de Arce y Ceballos. Declared a National Monument in 1975 and a Cultural Asset of National Interest, the temple concentrates centuries of religious and political memory. In 1968 it was the scene of the International Eucharistic Congress and the visit of Paul VI, the first by a pope to Colombia. Restoration campaigns between 1943 and 1946 and between 1993 and 1997 preserved its structural and artistic integrity. The site receives visitors throughout the year and constitutes a point of reference for the Catholic community throughout Latin America.
Located on the eastern side of the Plaza de Bolívar in Bogotá, the Primada Cathedral of Colombia opens its doors to those wishing to explore five centuries of religious and artistic history. Its neoclassical naves, chapels with colonial paintings, and the largest organ in the country offer a contemplative experience that combines art, history, and spirituality. Those who visit Bogotá will find in this place a living testimony of the faith and history of Colombia.
