About Catedral de San Isidro
📜 History
In the year 1706, Captain Domingo de Acassuso founded a chapel at the site where the cathedral stands today. That first oratory marked the origin of the devotion to San Isidro Labrador in the city that bears his name. Throughout the following centuries, the local community grew around this religious center until the need for a larger temple led to the project for the current building. The work was commissioned to architects Jacques Dunant and Charles Paquin, who designed a building in the Neo-Gothic style that revived the construction forms used in Europe between the 12th and 16th centuries. The temple was inaugurated on July 14, 1898. With the creation of the Diocese of San Isidro in 1957, the cathedral became the episcopal seat, with Monsignor Antonio María Aguirre as the first bishop (1957-1985), followed by Monsignor Alcides Jorge Pedro Casaretto (1985-2011) and Monsignor Oscar Vicente Ojea (since 2011). The Argentine state recognized the heritage value of the building by declaring it a National Historic Site through Decree No. 9226, dated October 10, 1963.
🏛️ Architecture
The building corresponds to the Neo-Gothic style, a movement that in the 19th century revived the medieval forms used in Europe between the 12th and 16th centuries. Architects Jacques Dunant and Charles Paquin designed a Latin cross floor plan with three naves separated by cylindrical columns and a circular apse. The main tower reaches 68 meters in height, one of the most recognizable elements of the urban skyline of San Isidro. The facade combines simulated Paris stone with exposed brick, articulating different textural registers characteristic of the Gothic tradition. The windows are decorated with stained glass made in France, whose polychromy illuminates the interior with filtered light. The ensemble incorporates Gothic rose windows that articulate the facades and allow natural light to enter the side naves. Although the project adopted a historicist aesthetic, the construction used modern materials available in the late 19th century, combining formal fidelity to European Gothic with the construction techniques of the time.
⭐ Key Facts
The cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of San Isidro, established in 1957, making it the liturgical and administrative center of Catholicism in the northern part of the Buenos Aires metropolitan area. It is consecrated to San Isidro Labrador, whose feast day is celebrated every May 15 with liturgical celebrations that gather faithful from across the region, maintaining a tradition linked to the city's patronage since the 18th century. The historical value of the building was formally recognized in 1963, when it was declared a National Historic Site through Decree No. 9226. This recognition reflects the importance of the temple not only as a place of worship but also as a testament to 19th-century religious architecture in Argentina.
