About Catedral Basílica de Nuestra Señora de San Juan de los Lagos

📜 History

The history of this sacred site in San Juan de los Lagos begins in 1630, when Diego de Camarena started the construction of the first sanctuary, completed in 1642. Due to the growth of popular devotion, a second temple was built, finished in 1682, which today functions as the Parish of San Juan Bautista. The construction of the current building began on November 30, 1732, under the sponsorship of the bishop of Guadalajara Carlos de Cervantes. The project was overseen by Juan Rodríguez de Estrada from 1732 until 1760, the year in which Juan Francisco Gudiño assumed the direction of the works until their completion in 1769. Throughout the subsequent centuries, the interior received various interventions of ornamentation and restoration. On March 25, 1972, through an Apostolic Constitution by Pope Paul VI, the temple was elevated to the rank of cathedral basilica, consolidating its role as the seat of the Diocese of San Juan de los Lagos. This nearly four-century trajectory reflects the continuous devotion that the image of the Virgin has generated among the faithful of Mexico and other countries.

🏛️ Architecture

The building is an example of New Spanish Baroque, with a Latin cross floor plan and Gothic molding vaults. It is built in quarry stone, the predominant material in the religious architecture of Jalisco. Its two bell towers reach 72 meters in height and constitute the most recognizable element of its urban profile. The interior stands out for the richness of its materials: the main altar incorporates columns of African marble and elements in Carrara marble. The tabernacle, the work of silversmith Epitacio Garabito, features eight paired Ionic columns topped by a silver dome. Juan Rodríguez de Estrada directed the works from the beginning in 1732, and Juan Francisco Gudiño completed them between 1760 and 1769. The combination of a large-scale Baroque structure with details of goldsmithing and imported marbles reflects the devotional and economic importance the sanctuary held for its promoters. The interventions carried out in later stages preserved the original formal elements while adapting some spaces to the liturgical needs of each period.
