About Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Chiquinquirá
📜 History
The devotion in Chiquinquirá originates from a painting on cotton canvas created in 1562 by the Spanish painter Alonso de Narváez. The work was moved to the city in 1577 and remained in a deteriorated state until 1585, when María Ramos, a Sevillian resident in the region, restored a modest chapel to house it. On December 26, 1586, the image regained its original appearance, an event that spurred popular devotion and motivated the construction of a larger temple. In 1587, Archbishop Fray Luis Zapata de Cárdenas ordered the erection of a stone and brick building on lands donated by Pedro de Rivera Santana; the first stone was laid on August 17, 1588. In 1596, Pope Clement VIII granted plenary indulgence to devotees who visited the sanctuary. The Dominican Order assumed administration of the site in 1636. By the late 18th century, the deterioration of the original building led Viceroy Ezpeleta to commission a new temple in 1790. The architect Fray Domingo de Petrés began the works in 1796 and directed them until his death in 1811. The current church was consecrated in 1823. On August 18, 1927, Pope Pius XI granted it the status of a minor basilica.
🏛️ Architecture
The current temple was designed by Fray Domingo de Petrés following the Neoclassical style predominant in the religious architecture of the New Granada in the late 18th century. The floor plan develops three naves arranged in a Latin cross with a semicircular apse, configuring a total area of 2,800 square meters. The interior houses fifteen chapels dedicated to the mysteries of the rosary, distributed along the side naves. The main facade is organized around a Doric order frontispiece with a width of 27 meters; on its sides rise two towers, each 37 meters high. The central body incorporates four pilasters supporting a cornice at 20 meters from ground level. An earthquake recorded on July 29, 1967 caused considerable damage to the facade and towers, requiring restoration work to recover the original composition of the building. The titular image, created by Alonso de Narváez in 1562 on cotton canvas with mineral pigments and organic dyes from the region, is preserved in the main altar protected by glass installed in 1897.
⭐ Key Facts
The Virgin of Chiquinquirá is declared the patron saint of Colombia, a condition that grants the sanctuary a central position in national Catholic devotion. Her image is also venerated as the patron saint of the National Army of Colombia. The liturgical feast is celebrated on July 9, a date commemorating the coronation of the image performed in 1919. On August 18, 1927, Pope Pius XI elevated the temple to the status of a minor basilica by papal decree, a recognition that confirms its spiritual relevance at a universal level. On July 3, 1986, Pope John Paul II visited the sanctuary during his apostolic journey to Colombia. In 2017, during Pope Francis's visit to the country, the image made a pilgrimage to Bogotá. The devotion transcends Colombian borders: the image is also the patron saint of the Venezuelan state of Zulia, the municipality of Maracaibo, and the Bolivarian National Guard of Venezuela. The Order of Preachers has administered the sanctuary uninterruptedly since 1636, representing an institutional management of nearly four centuries.
Chiquinquirá, known in Colombia as the City of the Virgin, receives pilgrims from across the country and neighboring nations throughout the year. The sanctuary offers both the solemnity characteristic of a pilgrimage site of national importance and the formal elements of a Neoclassical building of considerable dimensions. The image of the Virgin, preserved in its altar since the 16th century, is the center of a devotion that spans over four centuries of continuous history in the heart of the department of Boyacá.
