About Basílica Nuestra Señora de Luján
📜 History
The history of this sanctuary begins in 1685, when a first chapel was established to venerate the Virgin of Luján in the vicinity of the river of the same name. In 1730 the parish was formalized, and on December 8, 1763, a first larger-scale temple was inaugurated, which remained standing until its demolition in 1905. The construction of the current building began on May 6, 1890 under the direction of a team of technicians of French origin, including the engineers Alfonso Flamand and Rómulo Ayerza, along with the architects Ulrich Courtois, Ernesto Moreau and Francisque Fleury Tronquoy. The apse, chapels and main altar were completed on December 4, 1904, and the temple was inaugurated and blessed in December 1910, although the towers were not yet finished. These were completed between 1922 and 1926, and the work as a whole was considered finished in 1935. On November 15, 1930 it was elevated to the rank of Minor Basilica, and on March 12, 1998 it was declared a National Historic Monument of the Argentine Republic.
🏛️ Architecture
The building corresponds to the neo-Gothic style, with two twin towers that reach 106 meters in height. The floor plan measures 104 meters in length, 68.5 meters in width at the transept and 42 meters at the main facade. The materials used combine white stone from Tandil in the foundations with Carrara marble in the fourteen statues that adorn the main altar. The project was conceived by the engineers Alfonso Flamand and Rómulo Ayerza, with the participation of the architects Ulrich Courtois, Ernesto Moreau and Francisque Fleury Tronquoy, all of French training. The interior houses two organs from the Mutin-Cavaillé Coll house, a firm specialized in instruments for large-scale temples. The bell tower has fifteen bronze bells whose total weight amounts to 12,489 kilograms. The crypt, inaugurated on December 6, 1980, safeguards Marian images from different countries in America and Europe, and completes an architectural complex that integrates spaces of worship, memory and popular devotion in a single monumental-scale enclosure.
⭐ Key Facts
The Basilica of Our Lady of Luján is the main Marian sanctuary in Argentina. The image venerated inside corresponds to the Virgin of Luján, official patron saint of Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, which gives it a religious dimension that transcends national borders. It was declared a National Historic Monument on March 12, 1998, a recognition that reflects its heritage value in addition to the religious one, and it holds the designation of National Sanctuary of Argentina. Among recent historical milestones, the temple was the site of the ecumenical Te Deum celebrated within the framework of the Bicentennial of Argentine Independence in 2010, with the presence of President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. The central feast of the Virgin of Luján is celebrated on the first Sunday of October, an occasion on which hundreds of thousands of faithful make pilgrimages on foot from Buenos Aires and other localities, covering distances of up to 65 kilometers. This tradition makes the sanctuary one of the most visited pilgrimage destinations in South America.
The Luján sanctuary remains open throughout the year and receives visitors from Argentina and abroad. The scale of the interior, the crypt with its collection of Marian images and the historical surroundings of the city offer different reasons for a visit, whether in the context of the October pilgrimages or on any other date. For those approaching for the first time, the enclosure maintains the same disposition for recollection that has characterized it since its origins in the 17th century.
