About Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar

📜 History

The history of the temple dates back to the 9th century, when a Mozarabic church dedicated to Santa María existed on this site. In the 13th century, a Romanesque construction was erected, replaced between 1293 and 1515 by a Gothic-Mudejar church whose altarpiece was completed in 1518. In 1676, the Bull of Union consolidated its status as a cathedral-basilica. The construction of the current Baroque building began in 1681 under the patronage of Juan José de Austria, with a design by Felipe Busiñac and Felipe Sánchez, and continued with Francisco de Herrera el Mozo. Between 1750 and 1765, Ventura Rodríguez undertook important reforms, including the execution of the Santa Capilla. The central domes were built between 1866 and 1872. The second tower was erected between 1903 and 1907, and the northern towers were completed between 1950 and 1961. In 1904, it was declared a national historic-artistic monument, and in 1948 Pope Pius XII granted it the rank of minor basilica.

🏛️ Architecture

The temple follows a basilical plan with three naves and seven bays, combining Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical elements. It measures 130 meters in length and 67 meters in width, and its towers reach 98 meters in height. The exterior facade is built of brick, while the interior uses stucco, stone, and jasper columns. The roof features eleven vaulted sections with domes covered in glazed tiles in shades of green, yellow, blue, and white. The building has four corner towers. The original design is the work of Felipe Busiñac and Felipe Sánchez; Francisco de Herrera el Mozo continued the works; and Ventura Rodríguez carried out the 18th-century reforms, including the Santa Capilla. The northern towers were executed by Miguel Ángel Navarro Pérez in the 20th century. The interior houses a main altarpiece of polychrome alabaster made by Damián Forment between 1509 and 1518, frescoes by Francisco de Goya in the Regina Martirum dome (1781) and in the Adoración del Nombre de Dios vault (1772), as well as paintings by Francisco Bayeu and Ramón Bayeu in various domes. The choir stalls, carved in wood between 1542 and 1548 by Esteban de Obray, Juan de Moreto, and Nicolás Lobato, preserve 124 of the original 138 seats.

⭐ Key Facts

The Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pilar is the co-cathedral of the Archdiocese of Zaragoza along with the Cathedral of San Salvador. Tradition considers it the first Marian temple of Christendom. The object of greatest devotion is the Santa Columna, a piece of jasper on which rests a 36-centimeter image of the Virgin, carved in gilded wood and attributed to Juan de la Huerta in 1435. The north and east facades preserve the marks of cannon impacts from the Sieges of Zaragoza in 1808 and 1809. Four bombs that fell during the Spanish Civil War in 1936 did not explode; two of them are preserved as relics inside the temple. The museum safeguards more than 350 mantles of the Virgin, goldsmith crowns, liturgical silver, and a 12th-century ivory oliphant donated in 1135. It was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1904 and elevated to the rank of minor basilica by Pope Pius XII in 1948.

The Cathedral-Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pilar constitutes one of the main pilgrimage and cultural visit destinations in Spain. Its polychrome tile domes, Goya's frescoes, and the Santa Columna offer visitors a journey through centuries of art history and Marian devotion in the city of Zaragoza. The adjacent museum preserves a heritage accumulated over generations of donations and liturgical life, with pieces ranging from the 12th century to the present.
