About Basílica de Nossa Senhora Aparecida

📜 History

In 1717, three fishermen extracted from the waters of the Paraíba do Sul River a clay image of Our Lady of the Conception, initially headless, which would later become known as Nossa Senhora Aparecida. Popular devotion grew steadily, and in 1734 a larger chapel was erected to house the image. In 1834, the first basilica was built on the site. As the number of pilgrims increased, the structure became insufficient, and between 1952 and 1954, leveling works were carried out on Pitas Hill to prepare the land for the new construction. On November 11, 1955, the construction of the current basilica, known as the Basílica Nova, began from the north side and the Torre Brasilia. On July 4, 1980, Pope John Paul II consecrated the sanctuary, still under construction, during his visit to Brazil. In 1984, the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil declared it a National Sanctuary. On November 12, 2016, it was elevated to the seat of the Archdiocese of Aparecida, consolidating its character as a Marian reference center for the entire nation.

🏛️ Architecture

The Basílica Nova was designed by architect Benedito Calixto Neto in a Neo-Romanesque style. Its floor plan adopts the shape of a cross with four naves. The dimensions are considerable: the length reaches 188 meters and the width 183 meters, giving it an interior area of approximately 25,000 square meters. The maximum height of the building reaches 109 meters, while the central dome rises to 70 meters. The interior can accommodate 30,000 seated people or up to 45,000 standing, and in outdoor celebrations it can gather more than 300,000 faithful. The exterior walls feature exposed brick, while inside, a niche with marble and gold cladding that houses the image of the Virgin stands out. The Basílica Velha, the previous construction, features a Baroque style with two towers and bell towers; its main altar and altarpiece were sculpted in Carrara marble, and it has ornamental carvings in cedar wood. The two basilicas are connected by a 500-meter walkway known as the Passarela da Fé, inaugurated in 1972.

⭐ Key Facts

Nossa Senhora Aparecida was proclaimed the principal patroness of Brazil by Pope Pius XI in 1930, and October 12, the day of her liturgical feast, is a national holiday in that country. The sanctuary receives around 7 million visitors per year, placing it among the most visited Catholic pilgrimage destinations in the world. On October 12, the influx can exceed 200,000 pilgrims in a single day. The basilica has received the Golden Rose on three occasions: in 1967 by Pope Paul VI, in 2007 by Pope Benedict XVI, and in 2017 by Pope Francis, a distinction reserved for sanctuaries of special Marian devotion. By interior area, it is the second largest Catholic church in the world, after St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. The complex includes confession chapels, baptismal rooms, medical facilities, dining halls, and the Sala dos Milagres, where ex-votos offered by the faithful as a sign of gratitude are displayed. Since 2016, the sanctuary has also been the seat of the Archdiocese of Aparecida.

Aparecida welcomes those who arrive on pilgrimage or out of cultural interest with a space of recollection that has welcomed millions of people over three centuries. The image of the Virgin, preserved in its marble niche in the basilica, remains the center of the spiritual life of one of the largest Catholic communities on the continent. Those who visit the complex can walk along the Passarela da Fé, see the Basílica Velha, and stop at the Sala dos Milagres, where each offering tells a story of faith. The sanctuary is open every day of the year.
