About Basílica de la Merced

📜 History

The presence of the Order of Mercy in Santiago dates back to 1541, when its friars arrived in Chile alongside Pedro de Valdivia. In 1566, the first temple was built on the site it occupies today, with adobe walls and brick arches, but the 1647 earthquake destroyed that structure. The second building, completed in 1683, adopted a basilica plan with eighteen brick vaults; however, it collapsed during the 1730 earthquake. The construction of the current building began in 1736 and concluded in 1760. Between 1795 and 1799, the Italian architect Joaquín Toesca executed significant internal modifications. The towers were incorporated in later stages: the first in 1859 and the second in 1885, both made of brick with upper wooden sections. On July 12, 1922, it was elevated to the rank of Minor Basilica by the Holy See, and on October 26, 1977, the Chilean state declared it a National Historic Monument through Supreme Decree No. 804.

🏛️ Architecture

The temple follows a basilica plan with three naves separated by columns. The central nave is covered by a continuous barrel vault, while the side naves feature flat ceilings. The main facade incorporates pilasters and a pediment above the central entrance, elements characteristic of the neoclassical language that defines the building constructed from 1736 onward. The initial construction works were overseen by the architects Alonso Rosas and Alonso de Covarrubias. Between 1795 and 1799, the Italian architect Joaquín Toesca carried out modifications to the interior of the temple. The two side towers, built in 1859 and 1885 respectively, are made of brick with wooden upper finishes. Inside, the 40-stop pipe organ stands out, manufactured in 1908 by the German company Walcker and considered the largest in the country. The complex is located at 341 Mac-Iver Street, in the historic center of Santiago, two blocks from the Plaza de Armas.

⭐ Key Facts

The basilica holds a central place in the religious history of Santiago as the main headquarters of the Order of Mercy in Chile since the colonial period. It safeguards a reliquary with two fragments attributed to the Holy Cross, an object of veneration for the faithful who visit the temple. Inside are the tombs of prominent colonial figures: Rodrigo de Quiroga, governor of the Kingdom of Chile, and Inés de Suárez, the first documented Spanish woman to arrive in Chilean territory. The declaration as a National Historic Monument, granted on October 26, 1977 through Supreme Decree No. 804, provides official protection for its architecture and movable assets. The elevation to the rank of Minor Basilica, granted on July 12, 1922, is a papal recognition of its liturgical and heritage significance within the Archdiocese of Santiago. The 40-stop Walcker organ also positions the temple as a reference for sacred music in the country.

The temple is located at 341 Mac-Iver Street, two blocks from the Plaza de Armas in Santiago, and remains open for worship and visits. Its three naves span more than four centuries of history, from the first Mercedarian friars who accompanied the city's founding to the 19th-century restorations. The colonial tombs, the German organ, and the Holy Cross reliquary make this site a place of living memory for those who approach the religious heritage of Santiago.
