About Basílica Catedral de Nuestra Señora del Rosario
📜 History
The origins of the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary date back to 1731, when the first parish chapel was established in the then incipient settlement of Rosario. Decades later, in 1773, the image of the Virgin of the Rosary was brought from Cádiz, Spain, consolidating the devotion that would come to define this church community. The current building was constructed at the end of the 19th century, adopting the Neoclassical style that characterizes its architecture. An important milestone occurred in 1898, when the main altar of Carrara marble, imported from Italy, was installed. On April 20, 1934, with the erection of the Diocese of Rosario, the church was elevated to the status of cathedral. Later, on October 7, 1966, the Vatican granted it the title of Minor Basilica, a distinction reserved for temples of particular historical and religious relevance. Within it rest the remains of four archbishops of the Archdiocese of Rosario: Silvino Martínez, Guillermo Bolatti, Jorge Manuel López, and Eduardo Vicente Mirás, which reinforces the character of this site as a living memory of regional Catholicism.
🏛️ Architecture
The temple corresponds to the Neoclassical style, characterized by order, symmetry, and formal references to Greco-Roman architecture. Its main facade projects towards Plaza 25 de Mayo, in the historic center of Rosario. Inside, the main altar is one of its most notable pieces: it was crafted from Carrara marble, imported from Italy, and installed in 1898. The cathedral also features a subterranean camarín, a devotional chamber conceived to house the image of the Virgin, with a capacity for one hundred and fifty people, inaugurated in May 1925. This space allows the faithful a more intimate experience of recollection near the titular image. Among the artistic elements of the interior, a stained-glass window titled 'Creación de la Bandera' (Creation of the Flag), the work of artist Francisco Stella, incorporated into the temple in 1927, stands out, linking Argentine civil history with the sacred space. The architectural complex is completed by the Pasaje Juramento, a gallery that connects the cathedral with the neighboring Palacio de los Leones.
⭐ Key Facts
As the seat of the Archdiocese of Rosario, the cathedral occupies the central place in the ecclesiastical hierarchy of the region. The image of the Virgin of the Rosary, brought from Cádiz in 1773, is the patroness of the temple, and her feast day is celebrated on October 7, the date on which the Catholic Church commemorates Our Lady of the Rosary. On that same day in 1966, the temple was recognized with the title of Minor Basilica by the Vatican, a distinction that underscores its importance within Catholicism. The cathedral occupies a central position in the urban fabric of Rosario: it is located next to Plaza 25 de Mayo and borders, through the Pasaje Juramento, the Palacio de los Leones, the seat of the municipal government. This proximity between the religious and civic spaces reflects the historical role of the temple in the public life of the city. The site also houses the remains of four archbishops of the archdiocese, making it a place of institutional memory for the Church in Santa Fe.
The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary is located in the historic heart of Rosario, steps away from Plaza 25 de Mayo. Its naves offer a space of silence and recollection in the midst of one of Argentina's most dynamic cities. Those who visit it will be able to contemplate the Carrara marble altar, explore the subterranean camarín, and admire the stained-glass window that unites religious history and national history. The image of the Virgin of the Rosary, venerated since the 18th century, continues to be the center of a living devotion that calls the faithful from across the entire region.
