A church's name is a small act of theology — a congregation telling the world, in three or four words, who they are. We hold 212,260 U.S. church names in our directory. Counting them reveals how America actually brands its faith, and the most common names are not the ones you might guess.
Key findings
- The single most common church name in America is “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” (3,321) — because every Mormon meetinghouse carries the exact same official name, a uniformity no other tradition shares.
- The classic “First [Denomination] Church” convention dominates Protestant naming: First Baptist (2,349), First Presbyterian (1,155), First United Methodist (987), First Christian (753).
- After that come the evocative biblical place-names — Mount Zion, Bethel, Calvary, New Hope — the poetry of American Protestantism.
Why “First Baptist” is everywhere
The “First” convention is a fossil of the frontier. As towns formed across 19th-century America, the first congregation a denomination planted simply called itself the First — First Baptist, First Presbyterian, First Methodist. Multiply that by thousands of towns and you get one of the most repeated naming patterns in the country. It is also a quietly competitive claim: to be first is to be founding.
The uniform names: Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses
Two traditions stand apart by naming every congregation identically. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints tops the entire list precisely because it does not vary the name from one meetinghouse to the next, and “Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses” (1,309) ranks high for the same reason. Centralized naming is itself a statement about authority and identity.
