Mary, the mother of Jesus, holds a special place in the Christian faith. She is not only honored as the one who gave birth to the Son of God, but also as a shining example of humility, obedience, and deep trust in God. In a world often marked by busyness and self-centeredness, Mary's attitude can inspire us and enrich our own faith journey.
The Bible shows us Mary as a woman who, despite her youth and the unusual circumstances of her pregnancy, was willing to trust God's plan. When the angel Gabriel announced that she would give birth to the Messiah, she replied, “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38, NIV). These words express a deep devotion that still challenges and encourages us today.
In the following, we will focus on three aspects that make Mary a model of faith: her humility, her obedience, and her faithfulness in difficult times. Each of these points can help us deepen our own faith and live it out in daily life.
Humility: Mary's Attitude Toward God
Humility is a virtue often misunderstood in our society. Some see it as weakness, but the Bible teaches us that humility is the foundation for a genuine relationship with God. Mary is a perfect example. She did not exalt herself because of her calling but accepted it with modesty.
In her song, the Magnificat, she praises God and says, “For he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed” (Luke 1:48, NIV). Mary acknowledges that God lifts up the humble and scatters the proud. This attitude reminds us that we should not boast about our accomplishments before God but see ourselves as dependent on him.
“For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted” (Luke 14:11, NIV)
How can we practice humility in our lives? By viewing our successes and abilities as gifts from God and not elevating ourselves above others. Mary shows us that true greatness consists in giving glory to God and being willing to take on even humble tasks.
Obedience: Mary's Yes to God's Plan
Obedience to God is another key point in Mary's life. She could have been afraid or hesitant when the angel brought the message. Instead, she responded with a clear “yes.” This obedience was not blind but stemmed from her deep trust in God's goodness and faithfulness.
Obedience does not mean turning off one's reason but putting God's guidance above one's own plans. Mary knew that her pregnancy would bring social stigma and personal difficulties. Yet she trusted that God would provide a way.
“I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38, NIV)
For us today, this can mean that in decision-making situations we consciously seek God's will and are willing to follow unusual paths. Obedience is not always comfortable, but it ultimately leads to a fulfilling life in God's presence.
Faithfulness: Mary in Difficult Times
Mary's life was not without suffering. She had to watch as her son was persecuted, tortured, and crucified. Yet she remained faithful by his side. In the Gospels we see her standing at the cross (John 19:25). This faithfulness is a powerful testimony to the strength of faith.
Faithfulness means standing by God even when it gets hard. Mary did not lose faith when everything seemed to be against Jesus. She held on to hope.
