The Green Scapular: A Sign of Mary's Protection and a Call to Conversion

Source: EncuentraIglesias Editorial

In our journey of faith, we sometimes encounter objects that help us feel closer to God and the Virgin Mary. The Green Scapular is one of those spiritual gifts that the Church offers as a sacramental—a sacred sign that disposes us to receive grace and reminds us of the truths of our faith. In this article, we want to share with you what it is, its origin, and how it can be a blessing in your life and the lives of your loved ones.

The Green Scapular: A Sign of Mary's Protection and a Call to Conversion

Mary, as a loving mother, always intercedes for us before her Son Jesus. The Green Scapular is especially associated with devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the prayer for the conversion of sinners. It is not a magical charm, but a visible expression of a living faith and filial trust in the protection of our heavenly Mother.

Origin of the Green Scapular: A Revelation to Sister Justine Bisqueyburu

The history of this sacramental dates back to September 8, 1840, the day the Church celebrates the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. On that date, Mary appeared to Sister Justine Bisqueyburu, a French religious sister of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. In the vision, Mary was dressed in white and sky blue, and in her left hand she held a green cloth scapular fastened with cords of the same color.

On the front of the scapular, the Virgin showed her Immaculate Heart; on the back, the same Heart pierced by a sword, crowned by a cross, and surrounded by the invocation: “Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death.” Sister Justine was commissioned to make this devotion known, and since then, many faithful have found in the Green Scapular a means to entrust to Mary the conversion of sinners and the salvation of souls.

What Does the Color Green Mean?

In Christian liturgy and symbolism, the color green represents hope, new life, and spiritual fruitfulness. By wearing the Green Scapular, we remember that the Virgin Mary is “full of grace” and that her intercession helps us grow in hope of eternal life. It is a color that invites trust in God, who never abandons his children.

Differences from Other Scapulars

Unlike other more well-known scapulars, such as the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Green Scapular is not linked to a specific confraternity or sodality, nor does it require a formal ceremony of investiture. Anyone can wear it with faith and devotion, without the need for a special rite. However, the Church recommends that it be blessed by a priest, as a sign of God's blessing on the wearer.

While the Brown Scapular is a sign of the protection of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the promise of salvation for those who wear it, the Green Scapular focuses especially on the conversion of sinners and trust in the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Both are valid and enrich popular piety, but each has its own charism.

How to Use the Green Scapular

The Green Scapular is usually worn around the neck, with the cloth rectangle resting on the chest. It can be worn by both men and women, and it is common for parents to place it on their young children as a sign of protection. What matters is not the object itself, but the interior disposition of the one who wears it.

The Church teaches us that sacramentals, like the scapular, prepare us to receive the sacraments and help us live in grace. Therefore, when wearing the Green Scapular, it is good to renew the intention to live according to the Gospel, approach confession and communion, and frequently pray the invocation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
