Dear brothers and sisters, in our journey of faith, there are special moments when the Christian community gathers to listen to God's voice and discern together the path forward. These church assemblies are not merely administrative meetings, but sacred spaces where the Holy Spirit works among God's people.
Imagine for a moment those gatherings where brothers and sisters from different places come together, whether in person or virtually, with one common purpose: to seek God's will for His church. It is in these encounters that we remember we do not walk alone, but form part of Christ's body, each with different yet complementary gifts.
The Value of Communion in Decision-Making
When the church gathers in assembly, it is living out a fundamental biblical principle. The book of Acts shows us how the early church made important decisions in community:
"The apostles and elders met to consider this question" (Acts 15:6, NIV).This model teaches us that important decisions for the church's life should be made in community, with prayer, dialogue, and under the Holy Spirit's guidance.
In these spaces of communal discernment, we learn to listen not only to our own voices, but also to those of our brothers and sisters, and above all, to God's voice speaking through His Word and through the community gathered in His name.

In such a divided world, church assemblies remind us of the beauty of unity in diversity. Paul exhorts us:
"I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought" (1 Corinthians 1:10, NIV).
Assemblies are practical opportunities to live out this unity, where different perspectives meet under the common denominator of love for Christ and desire to serve His church.

Just as we find important records of God's people's history in the Bible, the minutes and documents of church assemblies serve as testimony to the church's journey in a specific time and place. These records are not just administrative files, but testimonies of how God has guided His people through the years.
When a Christian community documents its discernment and decision-making processes, it is creating historical memory that can inspire future generations and serve as reference for continuing to build on solid foundations.
The Context of Our Time
In these times of change and challenges for the universal church, we remember with gratitude the service of those who have guided God's people. Recently, the Roman Catholic community experienced the transition from Pope Francis, who passed away in April 2025, to the current Pope Leo XIV, elected in May 2025. These events remind us that all Christian traditions have transition and renewal processes that require wisdom and communal discernment.
For our evangelical and Protestant communities, assemblies represent similar moments of reflection, decision-making, and renewal of commitment to the mission God has entrusted to us.
Essential Elements of a Healthy Assembly
What makes a church assembly truly meaningful and fruitful? I share with you some key elements:
- Constant prayer: Every discussion and decision should be infused with prayer.
- Active listening: Learning to listen both to God and to fellow believers.
- Respect for diversity: Recognizing that the Holy Spirit can speak through different people and perspectives.
- Focus on mission: Always keeping present the evangelistic purpose and service that Christ has entrusted to us.
- Transparency in processes: Ensuring all members understand how decisions are made and why.
Church assemblies, when well conducted, become true milestones in a Christian community's life. They are moments when communion is strengthened, vision is clarified, and commitment to the Gospel is renewed.
