New Priest Advisor Appointed at Canção Nova: A Ministry of Presence and Support

Father Alex, born in Natal (RN) on October 20, 1986, joined Canção Nova on January 5, 2006, and was ordained a priest on August 28, 2016. His journey includes missions in Cachoeira Paulista (SP), Queluz (SP), Fortaleza (CE), and Curitiba (PR), giving him a broad understanding of the needs and challenges priests face in different contexts.

Education and Experience in Service

The new advisor holds degrees in Philosophy, Theology, and Counseling, equipping him to address the spiritual and emotional needs of priests. Throughout his time in the community, he has served as a formator, vocational accompanier, mission leader, member of the Clergy core, and seminary rector. This extensive experience enables him to grasp the specific demands of priestly ministry.

As the priest advisor, Father Alex will be responsible for accompanying, guiding, and supporting the priests of Canção Nova, promoting their spiritual, emotional, and pastoral well-being. His term is five years, during which he will serve as a point of reference for the clergy, helping them face the challenges of ministry and grow in their vocation.

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11, NIV)

The Election Process at the General Assembly

The 16th General Assembly of Canção Nova is a time of discernment and decision-making for the community. In addition to electing the priest advisor, members are voting to choose the Married Member in charge of Couples, the Celibate Member in charge of Celibates, and two General Counselors. This process reflects the community's participatory governance model, which seeks to listen to the Holy Spirit through prayer and dialogue.

Father Alex's election has been met with joy and anticipation. Many see him as an accessible and dedicated leader, capable of fostering unity and strengthening the priestly body. His experience in various areas of community life makes him a natural choice for this important role.

The Role of the Priest Advisor

Within Canção Nova's structure, the priest advisor plays a vital role. He not only coordinates the pastoral activities of the clergy but also acts as a spiritual father, offering counsel and support. In a world where priests face increasing pressures, having someone who understands and supports them is essential.

Father Alex, with his background in counseling, is particularly well-prepared to listen to and embrace the difficulties of his brother priests. He has already demonstrated this ability in his previous roles as formator and vocational accompanier, where he helped many young people discern their vocation and grow in faith.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

Priestly ministry is not without challenges. Loneliness, stress, and the pressure to produce results can affect the spiritual and mental health of clergy. Father Alex's mission will be to create spaces for listening and welcome, where priests can share their struggles and find renewal. Additionally, he will promote ongoing formation and holistic care for priests, in line with Church guidelines.

A key aspect of his work will be fostering fraternity among priests, so they do not feel alone on their journey. The community hopes that under his leadership, priests will find solid support and an environment of trust that allows them to fully develop in their vocation.

The election of Father Alex Freitas signals Canção Nova's commitment to caring for its shepherds. In a time when the Church needs leaders who listen and accompany, his appointment brings hope and renewal.
