The Canção Nova Community, known for its evangelistic work and strong presence in Catholic media, has a new president. Father Roger Luis da Silva was elected during the community's 16th General Assembly, held at Colégio São Manoel in Lavrinhas, São Paulo. The election took place on May 1, the day the Church celebrates St. Joseph the Worker—a sign of trust and renewal for the community's members.

New Leadership for Canção Nova: Father Roger Luis Takes the Helm

Father Roger Luis takes over from Father Wagner Ferreira, who had led the community since 2023. This transition marks the second successor since the passing of founder Monsignor Jonas Abib in December 2022. The assembly, which began on April 24, gathered members from various regions of Brazil to deliberate on the association's future direction.

In a time of prayer and discernment, participants elected not only the president but also the members of the General Council, who will assist in the community's governance for the coming years. The election followed the norms established by the Church for recognized associations, ensuring transparency and fidelity to the founding charisms.

Who Is Father Roger Luis?

Born in Itaperuna, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Father Roger Luis da Silva has a long history with Canção Nova. He joined the community in 2000 and has since served in various missions across Brazil, including Cachoeira Paulista (SP), Nova Esperança (PR), Palmas (TO), and Brasília (DF). His experience covers areas such as formation of new members, seminary rectorship, responsibility for local missions, and work with TV Canção Nova.

Father Roger Luis holds degrees in Philosophy and Theology and was ordained a priest on December 12, 2006. His academic and practical training prepared him to take on leadership at a crucial time for the community. As the counselor in charge of clergy, he had already demonstrated skill in handling spiritual and administrative matters.

"Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established." (Proverbs 16:3, ESV)

The choice of an experienced and dedicated leader reflects Canção Nova's pursuit of continuity and innovation. Father Roger Luis carries the vision of its founder but also brings fresh perspectives to meet the challenges of the contemporary world.

The Legacy of Monsignor Jonas Abib and the Continuity of the Charism

Monsignor Jonas Abib founded Canção Nova in 1978 with the aim of evangelizing through the media. His charism inspired thousands, and the community grew to become one of the largest Catholic associations in Brazil. After his death, the community went through a period of adjustment but remained faithful to its principles.

Father Wagner Ferreira, the first successor, led with dedication, preparing the ground for the new administration. Now, Father Roger Luis takes on the mission to continue that legacy, promoting faith and unity among members. Scripture reminds us: "Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith." (Hebrews 13:7, ESV)

Canção Nova is recognized for its work in radio, television, internet, and in-person events. The new leadership must strengthen these fronts, maintaining the community's relevance in the digital age. The expectation is that Father Roger Luis will inspire new projects and continue the mission of bringing Christ's message to all corners.

Challenges and Hopes for the Future

The new president faces significant challenges, such as renewing leadership, financial sustainability, and adapting to cultural changes. However, the community is confident in his leadership ability. "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." (Isaiah 41:10, ESV)
