The decision was made during the 16th General Assembly of the community, held in early May 2026. Father Clóvis, who joined Canção Nova in 2000 at age 22 and was ordained a priest in 2007, will now lead the spiritual and charismatic formation of members until 2031.
In a time of transition and renewal, the choice of Father Clóvis reflects the trust placed in him by his fellow community members. In his first words after the election, he emphasized that formation is a shared responsibility: “I don’t see strangers, but brothers and sisters. It’s an exchange of care, not a title of honor.” This pastoral and welcoming vision resonates with the spirit of Canção Nova, which seeks to form disciples committed to the Gospel.
The Legacy of Father Jonas Abib
Father Clóvis often mentions the influence of Canção Nova’s founder, Father Jonas Abib, who passed away in 2022. Father Jonas was a great educator and formator, passionate about young people and families. He founded the community in 1978 with the desire to lead people to a living experience with God. Father Clóvis, who lived with him for years, seeks to honor that legacy by adapting formation to contemporary challenges.
“Father Jonas’s testimony inspires me every day. He taught us that formation is not just theoretical, but lived out daily in prayer and service,” said the new formation director. Canção Nova, which today has thousands of members in several countries, continues to expand its mission, and formation is key to maintaining unity and spiritual fervor.
Challenges and Hopes for the Future
In an increasingly secularized world, Christian formation faces significant challenges. Father Clóvis acknowledges the need to revitalize spiritual life and the growth of the charism without losing sight of tradition. “Formation should be light yet deep. Light because we walk together; deep because it leads us to an encounter with God,” he explained.
