The Pontifical Lateran University (PUL), one of the Church's oldest and most respected institutions of higher learning, has just renewed its editorial agreement with the Vatican's Dicastery for Communication. The accord, signed on April 24, 2026, extends the partnership through December 31, 2027, ensuring the continued publication of theological, philosophical, and pastoral works that nourish Christian thought worldwide.

Under the renewed partnership, the Vatican Publishing House (LEV) will continue to handle the administrative, logistical, and commercial management of the university's Editorial Service. The Vatican Printing Press, meanwhile, will oversee the printing of books and academic journals. This means readers can continue to find PUL's works under the “Lateran University Press – P” imprint, now in collaboration with LEV, with the same quality they have come to expect.

For the Christian community, this renewal represents more than just a contract. It is a sign that the Church values knowledge and education as tools for proclaiming the Gospel. As Proverbs 1:7 reminds us: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” By producing excellent content, the university fulfills its role of serving truth and faith.

What PUL Publishes and Why It Matters

The Pontifical Lateran University is not merely an educational institution; it is a center of intellectual production that impacts the life of the Church. Its publications include scientific and didactic texts, academic journals, and undergraduate and doctoral theses. These materials are used by seminaries, theology faculties, and Christian leaders around the world.

With the renewal of the agreement, the university ensures that its works continue to be distributed with the credibility of the Vatican seal. This is especially important in a time when misinformation and relativism threaten many people's faith. As 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Among the journals published by PUL are periodicals on theology, canon law, and philosophy, which serve as references for scholars and pastors. The partnership with the Vatican guarantees that these journals reach libraries and institutions worldwide, promoting dialogue between faith and reason.

The Role of the Dicastery for Communication

The Dicastery for Communication is the Roman Curia body responsible for coordinating all communication activities of the Holy See. By taking on the editorial management of PUL, it demonstrates its commitment to spreading Christian knowledge in a professional and accessible manner.

Paolo Ruffini, prefect of the Dicastery, and Monsignor Alfonso Amarante, rector of PUL, signed the agreement in a ceremony at the Palazzo Pio. For Ruffini, this renewal is an opportunity to “join forces so that the Church's academic knowledge reaches an ever wider audience.” Monsignor Amarante highlighted that “the partnership with the Vatican gives the university the assurance that its publications will have the best possible distribution.”

This union between academia and communication is an example of how the Church can use its resources to fulfill Jesus' Great Commission: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). Publishing books and journals is a way of teaching and discipling, reaching people who may never set foot in a classroom.

What This Means for the Everyday Christian

You might be wondering: “What does this news have to do with my life?” Everything. The Church's academic production does not stay locked within university walls. It reaches you through books, Bible studies, online courses, and articles like this one. When PUL publishes a work, it puts tools at everyone's disposal to deepen their faith, better understand Scripture, and live the Gospel daily. This renewal ensures that this treasure of knowledge continues to flow, nourishing the Church and all who seek truth.
