The Catholic Latin America relief agency Adveniat recently released its annual report for 2025. Despite a slight decline in donations, the organization supported over 800 projects with a total of €30.6 million. Bishop Franz-Josef Overbeck, chairman of Adveniat, emphasized during the presentation in Essen that this figure is a strong sign of solidarity with the people of Latin America.

The funded projects span numerous areas: education, healthcare, agriculture, and strengthening civil society. Notably, many of these initiatives are led by local communities, enhancing their sustainability and effectiveness.

Biblical Foundations of Charity

Adveniat's work is deeply rooted in the Christian message. The Bible repeatedly calls us to solidarity with the poor and needy. In the Gospel of Matthew, we read:

“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40, NIV)

These words remind us that every service to our neighbor is also a service to Christ himself. Adveniat lives out this mission by providing concrete help while respecting the dignity of every person.

Challenges and Opportunities

Although donations have slightly decreased, Adveniat does not see this as a reason for resignation. Instead, the situation is used as motivation to work more efficiently and explore new avenues of support. The organizers are increasingly relying on digital formats and personal encounters to raise awareness of Latin America's needs.

Transparency and Trust

A core value of Adveniat's work is transparency. The organization ensures that donors can precisely track how their funds are used. This builds trust and encourages further support.

Together for a More Just World

Supporting over 800 projects shows that many people are willing to work for a more just world. Each of these projects is a small light of hope in often difficult circumstances. The Bible encourages us:

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9, NIV)

Practical Application: How Can You Help?

You might wonder how you can contribute. One way is to financially support Adveniat or similar relief organizations. But prayer is also a powerful form of solidarity. Take time to pray for the people of Latin America and ask God for wisdom for those leading the aid projects.

Additionally, you can initiate projects in your own community that promote global justice. Every small step counts, and together we can make a difference.

Finally, a question for reflection: How can we live out the love for our neighbor that Christ modeled for us more fully in our daily lives?
