The Canção Nova Community, known for its evangelistic work through media, has a new president: Father Roger Luis da Silva. His election, which took place during the 16th General Assembly in Lavrinhas, SP, marks the beginning of a new chapter in the community's history. But who is this priest, and what path has God laid out for him?

From a Dance Floor to Leading a Media Ministry: The Faith Journey of Fr. Roger Luis

Born in Itaperuna, RJ, on October 7, 1976, Father Roger Luis had a youth marked by distance from faith. Raised in a Catholic family, he himself admits that he lived away from the Church for a time. It was at a funk dance in 1995 that an unexpected experience changed his life: he felt God speaking to his heart, reminding him that he only sought Him in times of need. That encounter led him to accept an invitation from a prayer group coordinator, and from there, he had a personal encounter with Jesus that transformed everything.

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18, ESV). This passage reflects the moment when God reached the heart of young Roger, who was once far away but was touched by grace.

From Diocesan Seminary to Consecrated Life

After his conversion, the call to the priesthood soon followed. In 1998, he entered the Diocesan Seminary of Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ, where he completed the first three years of Philosophy. Although he already knew and was drawn to the charism of Canção Nova, it was in the seminary that he took his first steps toward ministry.

On December 28, 2000, his life took a new direction: he joined the Canção Nova Community, where he completed his studies. After a period in Lavrinhas, he was sent to the mission front of Nova Esperança in Maranhão, and then to other regions of Brazil. It was 26 years of missionary dedication, passing through four different fronts, which gave him a broad view of the challenges and blessings of evangelistic work.

“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58, ESV). This verse sums up Father Roger's perseverance throughout his journey.

The New President and the Challenges of Canção Nova

Father Roger Luis's election comes at a time of renewal for Canção Nova, which is celebrating more than four decades of existence. Founded by Father Jonas Abib, the community has always focused on evangelization through media, especially radio and television. Now, under new leadership, expectations arise about how the charism will be carried forward.

Father Roger Luis is known for his pastoral and approachable style, which fits well with the community's mission. He has experience in communication and has already worked on Canção Nova TV programs, which could be an asset in reaching new generations. Moreover, his experience in different regions of Brazil gives him sensitivity to the varied needs of the Church.

What to Expect from the New Administration?

The community faces the challenge of staying relevant in an increasingly digital world without losing the essence of the charism. Father Roger Luis has already indicated that he intends to strengthen the formation of missionaries and expand the reach of evangelistic initiatives. “Canção Nova is an instrument of God to bring hope. Our work is to continue this mission with faith and creativity,” he said in one of his first statements as president.

For the faithful who follow the community, the change in leadership is a reason for prayer and expectation. After all, Canção Nova has always been a reference for many Catholic families in Brazil.

A Reflection for the Reader

The story of Father Roger Luis reminds us that God calls ordinary people to do extraordinary things. Like him, many of us may have moments of distance, but the Lord is always ready to meet us, even in the most unexpected places, like a funk dance. May his testimony inspire us to be open to God's voice, calling us to a life of surrender and love.
