Engaging a New Generation: The Church's Evolving Path with Youth Today

In a world of constant change, the Church is experiencing a special moment of renewal in how it views the new generations. With the election of Pope León XIV in May 2025, following the passing of the beloved Pope Francis in April of the same year, we feel a breath of the Holy Spirit inviting us to walk together. The recent General Assembly of Bishops in Brazil brought forth deep discussions about how to welcome, listen to, and evangelize today's youth.

Engaging a New Generation: The Church's Evolving Path with Youth Today

As God's Word reminds us:

"Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity." (1 Timothy 4:12, NIV)
This verse shows us that young people are not just the future of the Church, but its most vibrant present.

World Youth Day and the Meeting of Cultures

The upcoming World Youth Day, taking place in South Korea, represents more than just a major Catholic event. It is a symbol of the universality of faith that transcends borders and cultures. After three decades since the last WYD in Asia (Manila, 1995), young Christians will have the opportunity to experience the richness of faith on the Asian continent.

Many Church leaders highlight the missionary strength coming from Asia, where Christian communities live their faith with deep fervor even as minorities in some countries. It is expected that young Filipinos, Koreans, Indians, and others from Asian nations will bring their unique witness to this global gathering.

This cultural diversity reflects the beauty of the Church that, as Saint Paul teaches us:

"so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others." (Romans 12:5, NIV)

Updating the Language of Faith for Youth

One of the great challenges discussed in recent Church assemblies is how to communicate the eternal message of the Gospel in language that resonates in the hearts of contemporary young people. It's not about changing the content of faith, but finding new ways to express it that are meaningful to those who grew up in a digital and globalized world.

Today's youth seek authenticity, community, and purpose. They value concrete experiences of faith more than abstract discourses. That's why many dioceses are developing new pastoral approaches that include:

  • Small group gatherings where young people can share their doubts and experiences
  • Responsible use of social media and digital platforms for evangelization
  • Service and volunteer projects that allow living faith in action
  • Spaces for art, music, and creativity as expressions of spirituality

The Role of Adults in Youth Formation

Adults in the Christian community have a special responsibility in accompanying young people. It's not about imposing ready-made answers, but walking together, listening to their questions, and sharing the wisdom of the Christian tradition. As the Book of Proverbs guides us:

"Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it." (Proverbs 22:6, NIV)

This teaching, however, needs to happen in the context of authentic and respectful relationships, where young people feel valued in their entirety.

Guidelines for Effective Evangelization

Recent Church discussions in Brazil highlight some important directions for youth evangelization:

  1. Attentive listening: Before speaking, we must genuinely listen to the longings, doubts, and hopes of young people.
  2. Life witness: Young people are particularly sensitive to the coherence between what is preached and what is lived.
  3. Embodied spirituality: Faith needs to connect with the concrete realities of young people's lives.
