In times of elections and crucial decisions in Congress, many Christians wonder what role the Church and believers should play in politics. The Bible guides us to respect authorities, but also to seek justice and peace for all. In this article, we will reflect on how to live out our faith in the current political landscape without losing the essence of the gospel.
Politics is not separate from Christian life. On the contrary, it is a tool to promote the common good. As Romans 13:1 says: "Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God." This reminds us that even amid disagreements, we should pray for leaders and actively participate in building a more just society.
The Urgency of Political Decisions and Christian Responsibility
In recent days, Congress has accelerated important votes, such as the nomination for the Supreme Court, the Dosimetry bill, and the special committee on the 6x1 work schedule. These decisions directly affect citizens' lives, including the Christian community. It is crucial that Christians stay informed and engaged, not only to vote conscientiously but also to positively influence public debate.
The apostle Paul urges us in 1 Timothy 2:1-2: "I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness." Praying for rulers is an act of faith that acknowledges God's sovereign control over nations.
Christians and Political Engagement
Many Christians avoid politics because they see it as dirty or corrupt. However, silence is also a form of stance. Jesus called us to be salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16), and that includes bringing Kingdom values into every sphere of society, including politics. It is not about partisanship but defending biblical principles like justice, mercy, and truth.

Spiritual Discernment Amid Political Maneuvering
The political maneuvering behind the scenes can lead to discouragement and distrust. However, as Christians, we are called to spiritual discernment. James 1:5 encourages us: "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." Moreover, we must avoid the polarization that divides the Church. Ephesians 4:3 urges us to "make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace." Jesus' Example: Service and Humility
Jesus Christ, the greatest leader of all time, did not seek earthly political power. He washed the disciples' feet and taught that the greatest must be a servant to all (Matthew 20:26-28). This model of servant leadership is essential for Christians who wish to engage in politics. It is not about ambition but about serving others with love and integrity.
The prophet Micah summarizes what God requires of us: "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8). May this be our motivation as we participate in public life, reflecting Christ's character in every decision.
