Canção Nova, one of Brazil's largest Catholic communities, is experiencing a special time of renewal and hope. Last Saturday, May 2, during the community's 16th General Assembly, two new General Councilors were elected to guide the institution's direction for the next five years, until 2031. In an atmosphere of prayer and discernment, community members chose missionary Flaviana Teixeira Gomes and João Luiz de Oliveira for these roles of great responsibility.
The electoral process, which involved members from various missions across Brazil, was marked by a deep sense of unity and commitment to the evangelizing mission. The election of the new councilors reflects the desire to keep the flame of the founding charism alive while addressing the challenges of the contemporary world.
Who Are the New Councilors?
Flaviana Teixeira Gomes: A Life of Dedication
Flaviana Teixeira Gomes, 47, from Belo Horizonte (MG), was elected as the 1st General Councilor. Her journey with Canção Nova began in 2005 when she decided to consecrate her life to the community. Since then, she has served in various capacities, including missions in Cachoeira Paulista (SP), Lorena (SP), and Campos dos Goytacazes (RJ).
In addition to her pastoral work, Flaviana has contributed significantly in administrative and formation areas. She worked in the financial sector of the John Paul II Foundation and as secretary of the Deliberative Council. Her academic background includes teaching certification, technical accounting, and an MBA in Project Management—skills that will undoubtedly be valuable for community leadership.
“It is a great responsibility, but also immense joy to serve God and the community in this new role. I trust in divine grace and the intercession of Our Lady so that we may walk together,” Flaviana said after the election.
João Luiz de Oliveira: Experience and Faithfulness
João Luiz de Oliveira, 65, from Taubaté (SP), was elected as the 2nd General Councilor. His journey with Canção Nova is marked by a long history of service: he has been a community member since 1981, having lived in several missions, including Cachoeira Paulista (SP) and Rondonópolis (MT).
His decades of accumulated experience are a major asset for community leadership. João Luiz is known for his serenity and wisdom, qualities that make him a reference among his brothers in the community. “I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me. May we, together, continue the mission of evangelization, bringing God's word to every corner,” he said.
The Role of the General Council in Canção Nova
The General Council is the highest governing body of Canção Nova, responsible for guiding the community's pastoral, administrative, and financial directions. Composed of elected members, the council works closely with the community's president, currently Father Jonas Abib (founder), to ensure the evangelizing mission is carried out faithfully to the original charism.
The councilors' responsibilities include approving action plans, supervising missions, overseeing member formation, and promoting community unity. The election of new councilors is always a time of renewal, bringing fresh perspectives and energy to leadership.
Biblical Reflection on Leadership and Service
The selection of leaders in the Christian community has always been a relevant theme in Scripture. The apostle Paul, in his letter to the Romans, exhorts: “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach” (Romans 12:6-7, NIV).
This passage reminds us that every leadership role is a gift from God, and that true greatness lies in humble service. May the new councilors, inspired by the Holy Spirit, guide Canção Nova with wisdom and love, following the example of Christ, who came not to be served but to serve.
