In a beautiful expression of ecclesial communion, the Peruvian Episcopal Conference has extended a special invitation to the entire Christian community of the country. This Sunday, April 19, Peruvian churches will join together in a National Day of Prayer for the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV. This initiative reminds us that, beyond our denominational differences, we share a common commitment to intercede for those who guide the universal Church.
Bishop Carlos García Camader, Bishop of Lurín and President of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference, has been the spokesperson for this call which seeks to strengthen the bonds of affection and support for the Successor of Peter. In his pastoral letter, he invites all believers to raise "intense and trusting" prayers for the pontiff, especially considering the current challenges of his ministry.
This day of prayer offers us a unique opportunity to live our faith in communion with the universal Church. As the apostle Paul reminds us:
"I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me" (Romans 15:30, NIV).Prayer for our spiritual leaders is not only a duty but a privilege that strengthens the body of Christ.
Prayer as an Expression of Communion
The call establishes that during Eucharistic celebrations, the Liturgy of the Hours, and in all pastoral spaces, fervent supplications will be raised for Pope Leo XIV. This initiative transcends the walls of temples and extends to the homes, communities, and hearts of every believer.
Prayer for the Holy Father is a concrete expression of our affective and effective communion with him. It is not simply about words spoken, but an attitude of the heart that recognizes the importance of sustaining in prayer those who have been called to guide God's people. As a Christian community, we are called to be that spiritual support that strengthens and encourages.
The President of the Peruvian Episcopate especially encourages bishops, priests, consecrated persons, and lay faithful to intensify this prayer. The invitation is to promote in all ecclesial communities a spirit of closeness and filial support toward the Pope. "May our communities be a visible sign of communion," expresses Bishop García Camader in his letter.
A Special Prayer for the Pope
As part of this day, a special prayer for Pope Leo XIV has been disseminated. In it, the Lord is asked to sustain the pontiff in moments of difficulty, grant him strength in faith, and accompany him in his mission to proclaim the Gospel with courage and love. This prayer reminds us that, regardless of our Christian traditions, we share the desire for Church leaders to faithfully fulfill their vocation.
Prayer unites us in a special way when we raise our petitions for those who have responsibilities of spiritual guidance. The Bible exhorts us:
"I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness" (1 Timothy 2:1-2, NIV).This Pauline teaching finds direct application in our intercession for the Pope and all ecclesial leaders.
Mary, Mother of the Church and Model of Intercession
The Peruvian Episcopal Conference has entrusted this intention to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. This trust in Marian intercession reflects a deep spiritual tradition that many Christians share, recognizing in Mary a model of faith and closeness to Christ.
Mary teaches us to treasure all these things in our hearts and to present
