On Tuesday, May 12, the Church lost one of its most dedicated servants. Swiss Cardinal Paul Emil Tscherrig passed away at the age of 79, leaving a legacy of diplomatic service and love for the Church. Pope Leo XIV, in a telegram sent to the family and the Diocese of Sion, expressed deep sorrow and gratitude for the life of the cardinal, who served as apostolic nuncio in several countries, including Italy and San Marino, where he was the first non-Italian to hold the post.

A Life of Faithful Service: Remembering Cardinal Paul Emil Tscherrig

In his message, the Holy Father highlighted his “faithful service as a pontifical representative” and his witness of “love for the Church and the Successor of Peter.” Cardinal Tscherrig, according to the Pope, “acted generously” and is now entrusted to God's mercy, that He may “welcome him into the light that knows no setting.” The Virgin Mary is invoked as intercessor for this minister of the Gospel.

The Journey of a Diplomat of Faith

Born on February 3, 1947, in Unterems, Switzerland, Paul Emil Tscherrig was ordained a priest in 1974. His love for study led him to earn a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. In 1978, Pope John Paul II called him to the diplomatic service of the Holy See, beginning a career that would take him to represent the Church in various nations.

As nuncio, Tscherrig served in countries such as Burundi, Trinidad and Tobago, and later in Italy and San Marino, where he broke the tradition of Italian nuncios. His experience and wisdom were also placed at the service of dicasteries of the Roman Curia, contributing to the governance of the universal Church.

What the Bible Teaches Us About Faithful Service

The life of Cardinal Tscherrig reminds us of Jesus' words in Matthew 25:21: “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!” (NIV). Like the faithful servant in the parable, Tscherrig dedicated his life to service, not seeking his own honor but the glory of God.

The apostle Paul also exhorts us in 1 Corinthians 4:2: “Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.” Tscherrig's faithfulness to his calling, even in challenging missions, is a testimony for all Christians. May we, like him, serve with joy and dedication wherever God places us.

Reflection for Our Daily Lives

The death of a Church leader invites us to reflect on our own faith journey. Like Cardinal Tscherrig, we are called to be representatives of Christ in our environment: at work, at home, in the community. We don't need to be nuncios or cardinals to witness God's love; every act of kindness, every word of comfort, every gesture of service is a way of being an “ambassador” of the Kingdom.

May we, remembering the life of this faithful servant, renew our commitment to follow Christ with courage and humility. And may, at the end of our days, we hear the same words: “Come and share your master's happiness.”

Let us pray: Lord, receive your servant Paul Emil into your peace. Grant us, through his intercession, the grace to serve you with joy and faithfulness until the end. Amen.
