When Children Become Political Props: A Christian Call for Justice

In recent days, a scene has gone viral: children brought to an official event, forced to smile, jump, and sing while the adults around them tried to project an image of happiness and normalcy. But the reality was different. The little ones weren't jumping, singing, or smiling. They looked at the ground, moved timidly, clearly uncomfortable. Even the president herself admitted, 'I can see the children are getting bored.' Yet the show went on. Photos were taken, joyful gestures were made, and the image of a happy celebration was broadcast.

When Children Become Political Props: A Christian Call for Justice

As Christians, we are called to open our eyes to such realities. The Bible reminds us that children are a gift from God, and we must protect and guide them with love. Jesus Himself said, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these' (Matthew 19:14, NIV). But when children are used as tools to cover up uncomfortable truths, we are failing as a society and as a church.

Manipulating the Most Vulnerable

This is not the first time we have seen children used as political shields. In different contexts, governments and those in power have used the image of childhood to divert attention from scandals, crises, or human rights violations. It is a strategy that exploits the innocence and vulnerability of the youngest to generate sympathy and hide reality.

In this case, the event coincided with serious allegations of links between officials and organized crime. Instead of addressing the scandal seriously, a show of normalcy was staged. But children are not campaign props or propaganda tools. They are human beings created in God's image, with dignity and rights.

What the Bible Says About Caring for Children

Scripture is clear about the responsibility of adults toward children. In the Old Testament, God commands His people to teach His commandments to their children (Deuteronomy 6:6-7). In the New Testament, Jesus rebukes His disciples for turning children away and issues a stern warning to those who cause them to stumble: 'If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea' (Matthew 18:6, NIV).

This warning is severe because God loves children and expects us to protect them. Using them for political, economic, or ideological purposes is a way of causing them to stumble, robbing them of their innocence, and exposing them to situations they should never experience.

The Responsibility of the Church and Believers

As a faith community, we have a duty to speak up when we see injustice. Proverbs 31:8-9 calls us: 'Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy' (NIV). Children are the most helpless, those without a voice in places of power. It is up to us to be their advocates.

This is not about politicizing the gospel, but about living out the command to love our neighbor and seek justice. When a government uses children to cover up its failures, the church must denounce it courageously, but also with love, always seeking the truth and the well-being of the little ones.

What Can We Do as Christians?

  • Pray for children who are victims of manipulation and abuse, and for leaders to act with justice.
  • Educate our communities about the value of childhood according to the Bible.
  • Denounce any form of child exploitation, whether political, labor, or domestic.
  • Support organizations that protect children's rights and provide safe spaces.

Let us remember that our faith calls us to be a voice for the voiceless. May we never remain silent when the innocence of children is used as a shield for injustice. Instead, let us be the hands and feet of Christ, defending the little ones and pointing to the truth that sets us free.
