Amidst the challenges facing our Christian youth today, a pastoral voice reminds us of the living presence of the Holy Spirit. Recently in Ecuador, a special Eucharist dedicated to vocations was celebrated, sharing a profoundly hopeful message for new generations. This gathering wasn't just another religious event, but a space where the certainty of divine love that transforms lives could be felt.
The celebration brought together numerous young people who, with open hearts, sought guidance in discerning the path God has prepared for each one. In a world that often demands demonstrations of worth to feel accepted, the central message was clear: God's love is free and precedes any human effort. As Scripture says:
"This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins" (1 John 4:10, NIV).
The Fire That Never Dies
The image of the Holy Spirit's "living fire" resonated particularly during this celebration. This fire isn't destructive but purifying and transformative, capable of igniting in our hearts a passion for following Christ. This divine fire has particular characteristics: it's creative, inspiring new ways to serve; it's bold, giving us courage to face challenges; and it's passionate, born from God's infinite love. It's not a fire we can control according to our preferences, but one we must let guide us, trusting that its warmth will lead us on paths of fulfillment.
When Love Comes Before Merit
One of the most liberating aspects of the shared message was the affirmation that we don't need to prove anything to be loved by God. In a society that constantly evaluates us by achievements, appearances, or possessions, this truth is revolutionary. Divine love reaches us first, when we haven't done anything to deserve it, and from that certainty we can build our identity.
This understanding radically changes our relationship with God. We no longer approach him as fearful servants trying to earn his favor, but as beloved children responding to freely given love. As young Christians, this perspective frees us from the burden of having to "be good enough" and allows us to embrace our vocation with confidence and gratitude.
Hearing the Voice Amidst the Noise
Vocational discernment can feel overwhelming for many young people. Between family expectations, social pressures, and personal doubts, distinguishing God's call requires inner silence and openness to the Spirit. The celebration in Ecuador highlighted the importance of creating spaces for listening where we can tune into the divine voice speaking deep within our hearts.
This discernment process isn't a solitary exercise. The Christian community, represented by the assembly of bishops who accompanied this Eucharist, plays a fundamental role as guide and support. Together, as Church, we can help one another recognize the gifts the Spirit has placed in each person and discover how to put them at the service of God's Kingdom.

Their testimony consists not primarily in eloquent words, but in lives marked by joy, hope, and selfless service. These witnesses, like beacons in the darkness, show through their example that following Christ isn't a burden but a path to authentic freedom and fulfillment. Their transformed lives become the most compelling invitation for others to open themselves to the Holy Spirit's work.
