Across many communities in Mexico, women who lead their households face enormous challenges: lack of stable employment, insufficient income, and the emotional burden of supporting their families. The Church, through Caritas, has launched a project that offers not only financial support but also psychological and spiritual accompaniment. This holistic approach aims to empower women to move forward sustainably.
One participant, Annel Juanchi Martínez, lives in Ciudad Altamirano, Guerrero. In 2021, her family faced an economic crisis when her husband lost his job and her income as a street vendor was unstable. She joined the Caritas program in late 2022, and during 2023 she consolidated a venture growing and selling vegetables, as well as producing chicken and quail eggs.
Annel describes the help she received as 'a lifeline.' In her own words: 'My husband was also desperate about the tough economy, having to cover the house, the kids, and everything else. This support came just in time.' Today, her business is a family effort: her husband and children participate in planting and harvesting, while she manages finances, sources supplies, and makes home deliveries.
The Impact of Psychological and Spiritual Support
Beyond the initial capital and administrative training, Annel emphasizes the value of psychological and spiritual accompaniment. 'It helps you a lot emotionally,' she says. Through regular workshops, participants learn strategies to manage stress, avoid depression, and maintain hope. 'They teach you tactics on how to move forward, how not to get depressed,' she explains.
This holistic approach reflects the heart of biblical teaching. As 1 Peter 5:7 (NIV) says: 'Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.' The Church not only provides material resources but also cares for the soul, recognizing that emotional and spiritual healing is fundamental for holistic prosperity.
Annel has also seen other women in the group grow. 'They have been able to become better people, more self-sufficient,' she comments. The faith community becomes a support network where each woman encourages another, recalling the words of Galatians 6:2 (NIV): 'Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.'
From Crisis to Sustainability: A Thriving Venture
Over time, Annel's venture evolved. Thanks to workshops on Integral Ecology offered by Caritas, she incorporated organic farming practices and natural fertilizer production. This not only improved the quality of her products but also reduced costs and cared for the environment.
Today, her husband has a stable job, but the family business remains an economic pillar. The production of eggs and vegetables generates additional income that allows them to save and plan for the future. Annel dreams of expanding her business and employing other women in the community.
This testimony is an example of how the Church, by integrating faith with economic development, can transform lives. As Proverbs 31:25 (NIV) says: 'She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.' Single mothers are not just surviving; they are thriving with dignity.
Lessons for the Christian Community
This project reminds us that the Church is called to be light and salt in the midst of difficulties. Holistic support—economic, psychological, and spiritual—is a model that can be replicated in other regions. As Christians, we can get involved in several ways:
- Pray for women leading households in vulnerable situations, asking God for wisdom and provision.
- Donate to organizations committed to empowering women.
