Between April 24 and May 2, 2025, the city of Aparecida (SP) will host a very special gathering for Christian life in our country. This will be the 62nd General Assembly of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB), bringing together 373 bishops from all Brazilian regions. This is a time of communion, reflection, and pastoral planning that deserves our attention and, especially, our prayers.
The Power of Intercession for Our Leaders
In Christian tradition, prayer for those who lead faith communities holds a special place. The apostle Paul exhorts us: "I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness" (1 Timothy 2:1-2, NIV). If this guidance applies to civil authorities, how much more for those who shepherd Christ's flock!
The bishops gathering in Aparecida carry immense responsibilities. They are pastors who accompany communities in diverse realities, from large urban centers to more remote regions, facing unique pastoral, social, and spiritual challenges. Their decisions and guidance directly impact the lives of millions of faithful throughout Brazil.
An Initiative That Invites Our Participation
The CNBB created a simple yet meaningful tool to involve the faithful in this important moment. Through the Assembly's official website, it's possible to randomly draw the name of one of the 373 participating bishops. The proposal is for each person or group to commit to praying for a specific bishop throughout the Assembly period.
This is not a magical or superstitious practice, but a concrete gesture of ecclesial communion. As the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us: "Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you" (Hebrews 13:17, NIV). Prayer is an essential part of this obedience and mutual care.
How to Join This Prayer Chain
Participating is simple and accessible to everyone:

The Current Ecclesial Context
This Assembly takes place at a significant moment for the universal Church. With the passing of beloved Pope Francis in April 2025 and the election of Pope Leo XIV (Robert Francis Prevost) in May of the same year, the entire Church lives in a time of transition and renewal. Brazilian bishops gather not only to address local matters but also to discern how to live and proclaim the Gospel in this new context.
The prophet Jeremiah offers us a beautiful image of pastoral leadership: "Then I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will lead you with knowledge and understanding" (Jeremiah 3:15, NIV). Our prayers can be a channel for this promise to be increasingly fulfilled in our leaders.
Practical Reflection: Beyond the Assembly
While we follow this General Assembly with interest and prayer, we can also broaden our perspective to Christian leaders in our daily lives. Prayer for pastors should not be limited to major events but become a constant practice in our spiritual lives.
