On Saturday, May 2, Pope Leo XIV received members of the Papal Foundation at the Vatican. This organization has long supported the Church's work around the globe. During the audience, the Holy Father expressed deep gratitude for the generosity of so many people whose donations allow others to experience "the goodness and mercy of God" in tangible ways.
The Papal Foundation, based in the United States, serves the Vicar of Christ and the entire Church by channeling financial resources and energy toward the Pope's priority needs. As its website explains, requests for help arrive at the Vatican daily from every corner of the world, and the foundation offers a unique opportunity for the faithful to collaborate directly with the Holy Father.
This meeting was not just a formality; it was a moment of communion and recognition. Pope Leo, who before being elected Bishop of Rome served as bishop in Chiclayo, Peru, shared his personal testimony: he witnessed firsthand the positive impact of the Foundation's donations in his former diocese. Now from the Vatican, he has seen that same love extended globally.
The Global Impact of Generosity
Leo XIV highlighted that the Papal Foundation funds projects, provides humanitarian aid, and grants scholarships to people around the world—all part of the Church's evangelizing mission. "Your generosity has allowed countless people to experience concretely the goodness and mercy of God in their communities," the Pontiff stated.
One of the most moving parts of his speech was when he mentioned priests and consecrated persons who have been able to study at the pontifical universities in Rome thanks to these scholarships. "Something that would otherwise have been impossible for them," he said. These future Church leaders are now better prepared to serve their communities.
The Pope also noted that although donors will likely never meet all the beneficiaries, he wanted to thank them on behalf of everyone. To make it more personal, he revealed that one of the scholarship recipients was sitting beside him: his personal secretary, Monsignor Edgard Rimaycuna Inga. "I am sure he will gladly say 'thank you,'" he added with a smile.
Fostering Peace and Harmony
Beyond education and humanitarian aid, the Papal Foundation also contributes to fostering peace at regional and local levels. Leo XIV explained that the tangible initiatives they support promote "authentic progress" and help build harmony among communities and individuals. In a world marked by divisions and conflicts, this work is more necessary than ever.
The Pope concluded his message by thanking the Foundation members for their presence and all they do. "With these sentiments, dear brothers and sisters, I thank you for your presence here today and for everything you do for the Church," he expressed.
An Invitation to Generosity
The visit of the Papal Foundation reminds us that we are all called to be instruments of God's goodness and mercy. As Scripture says:
"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Corinthians 9:7, NIV).
Not all of us can give large sums, but every small gesture counts. Whether by donating time, resources, or simply praying for the needs of the Church, we can all participate in this mission. Have you considered how you might support the work of the Church in your community or beyond?
Generosity not only transforms the lives of those who receive but also those who give. By opening our hearts and hands, we allow God to work through us. As we
