As part of his first apostolic journey to Africa, Pope Leo XIV visited the Republic of Cameroon in October 2025. The visit marked a significant moment for the country's Christian community, which with approximately 70% Christians plays an important role in Africa's church landscape. The Holy Father met with representatives of various Christian denominations, emphasized ecumenical cooperation, and gave special attention to the younger generation.
The central event of the journey took place at Douala's Japoma Stadium, where over 40,000 faithful gathered to hear the Pope. The atmosphere was filled with great joy and spiritual anticipation. Many young people had already made their way to the stadium in the early morning hours to secure a good spot and witness this special moment.
In his address, Pope Leo XIV emphasized the importance of Christian witness in a changing world. He called on believers not to consider their faith as a private matter, but as a living force that shapes both personal life and society. Speaking particularly to the youth, he spoke of the vocation to be bridge-builders in an increasingly fragmented world.
The Message to the Young Generation

He acknowledged the particular challenges facing youth today: economic uncertainty, political tensions in some regions of the country, and the temptations of a materialistic culture. "You are not the future of the Church," emphasized the Pope, "but its living present." These words resonated particularly with the young listeners, who often perceive themselves as marginalized within church structures. The Holy Father encouraged them to contribute their gifts and talents, enriching the Church with fresh ideas and youthful enthusiasm.
A central theme was the call to authenticity. In a world often characterized by superficiality and short-term trends, the Pope encouraged youth to plant deep roots in faith. He referenced the Parable of the Sower in Matthew's Gospel:
"But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown." (Matthew 13:23, NIV)
Taking Responsibility in Society
Pope Leo XIV stressed that Christian faith never remains merely individual but always carries social responsibility. He called on young people to actively engage for justice, peace, and care for creation. Particularly in a country like Cameroon with its ethnic and linguistic diversity, Christians' contribution to social cohesion is of immeasurable value.
The Pope warned against the temptation to be "bought" by material values and short-term success. Instead, he encouraged an attitude of service and solidarity. This message struck a chord with a generation that must find its way between traditional values and modern influences.
Ecumenical Encounters and Interreligious Dialogue
In addition to the large youth event, several ecumenical meetings took place during the papal visit. Pope Leo XIV met with representatives of Cameroon's Protestant churches, including the Presbyterian Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
