Last Sunday, Pope Leo XIV celebrated a solemn priestly ordination at St. Peter's Basilica, where several deacons were ordained as priests. The liturgy, centered on the Good Shepherd, drew many faithful and relatives of the candidates. In his homily, the Pontiff emphasized the special significance of priestly ministry and celibacy, which he honored as a form of dedication to God and the community.

The ceremony was marked by a deep spiritual atmosphere. The new priests, from various dioceses, knelt before the altar as the Pope laid his hands on them and recited the ordination prayer. This act, rooted in apostolic tradition, symbolizes the transmission of spiritual authority and incorporation into the priestly ministry.

Celibacy as a Sign of Devotion

In his homily, Pope Leo spoke at length about celibacy. He compared the celibate love for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven to married love: both must be nurtured and constantly renewed to remain fruitful. The Pope stressed that celibacy is not mere renunciation but a special vocation to a deep, free, and devoted love. This love enables priests not only to live an authentic spiritual life but also to engage actively as citizens, peacemakers, and promoters of social friendship.

„Certainly, just as the love of spouses, the love that inspires celibacy for the Kingdom of God must be preserved and renewed always, for every true affection matures and becomes fruitful over time.“

The Pope encouraged the candidates not to seek their security in their role or position, but solely in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The salvation they proclaim is already at work silently through people of good will and in communities. This perspective should protect them and give them strength even in difficult times.

Priestly Ministry as a Channel of Grace

A central image in the homily was the door. Pope Leo referred to the Gospel of the Good Shepherd (John 10:1-10), where Jesus calls himself the door for the sheep. The Pope called on the new priests to become doors themselves – open doors that make access to faith easier. They should never be obstacles or block the door, but rather act as channels of grace through which God's love can flow.

„Today more than ever, especially where numbers seem to show a distancing between people and the Church, keep the door open! Let them enter and be ready to go out. This is another secret for your life: you are a channel, not a filter.“

The Pontiff noted that many people already carry memories or ideas of the Church – sometimes living longings, sometimes disappointments. Priests are called to welcome these people without judging them. Their ministry is to accompany people on their faith journey and help them follow Jesus, the Good Shepherd.

The Importance of Community

Pope Leo underscored that the new priests are not left alone. They are sent into communities that will help them become holy, and they in turn are to accompany those communities on the path of faith. Parishes should be places of life where the resurrection of Jesus becomes tangible. In a time when many people are distant from the Church, it is important that priests cross the threshold of mystery together with the faithful – that threshold which bears the face of Jesus.

The Pope concluded with a call for the new priests to see themselves as part of suffering humanity
