During his African journey, Pope Leo XIV stopped on Monday in the city of Saurimo in northeastern Angola. There he visited a senior care home and offered warm words to the residents, as well as to the staff and volunteers. The Pontiff emphasized in his address how deeply he was moved by the thought that Jesus Christ is also present in this house. This visit symbolizes the importance the Christian community places on caring for the elderly.

Pope Leo XIV in Angola: Finding Christ in the Care of the Elderly

Pope Leo XIV's trip to Africa takes place at a special time, just months after his election in May 2025. His predecessor, Pope Francis, passed away on April 21 of the same year. The new Pope, whose civil name is Robert Francis Prevost, uses such visits to signal continuity in the Church's pastoral commitment to society's most vulnerable.

Christian Charity in Daily Life

In his speech, Pope Leo XIV elaborated on the image of Jesus's presence in the care home. He pointed out that Christ dwells where people meet one another in love, help each other as siblings, and are capable of reconciliation. He particularly emphasized the importance of simple and humble prayer, which connects the community of residents and caregivers. These everyday gestures of humanity are, in his conviction, concrete signs of faith.

The Bible gives us numerous references to the value of charity and service to the weak. The Letter of James states:

"Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world." (James 1:27 ESV)
This verse underscores that practical service to one's neighbor is an essential expression of faith.

The Spiritual Dimension of Care

The work in a senior home is not only a practical task but carries a deep spiritual dimension. Every gesture of care, every patient act of assistance can become an act of love for God. Pope Leo XIV reminded those in Saurimo that in encountering the old and frail, one can also seek an encounter with Christ himself, as promised in the Gospel of Matthew:

"Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me." (Matthew 25:40 ESV)

Valuing the Wisdom of Age

A central concern of the papal visit was honoring the older generation. Pope Leo XIV expressed his appreciation to Angolan authorities for initiatives benefiting needy seniors. He stressed that the quality of a society's social life is significantly shown by how it treats its frail members. Elderly people need not only care but, above all, to be heard, for they preserve the wisdom and memory of a people.

This attitude is also found in biblical tradition. The Book of Proverbs admonishes:

"Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and forsake not your mother's teaching." (Proverbs 1:8 ESV)
Valuing the experience and counsel of the elderly is a recurring theme in Holy Scripture and a foundation of a healthy community.

Gratitude Toward the Older Generation

Pope Leo XIV called for meeting seniors with gratitude. Many of them have taken on great difficulties in their lives and contributed to the community's well-being. This gratitude should express itself not only in words but in respectful attention and practical support. In a time that often foregrounds youth and activity, it is a Christian task to recognize the dignity and contribution of old age.
