On Friday, May 8, the Solemnity of Our Lady of Luján and the first anniversary of Pope Leo XIV's pontificate, the Church in Paraguay received news that fills the Diocese of Concepción with hope. Pope Leo XIV appointed Father Cristino Ramos González as the new bishop of this important episcopal see. The announcement was made simultaneously in Rome and Asunción through the Apostolic Nunciature in Paraguay.
This appointment not only marks a milestone in the life of the diocese but also reflects the Holy Father's pastoral care for local churches. The Diocese of Concepción, located in northern Paraguay, is a region with a rich evangelizing history and great pastoral challenges. The choice of Father Ramos González, a priest with extensive national and international experience, is a sign of the confidence the Pope places in him to guide this community.
Who Is Father Cristino Ramos González?
The new bishop-elect was born in Arroyos y Esteros, Cordillera Department, and is 51 years old. He was ordained a priest on September 7, 2002, at the parish of Santa Rosa de Lima in Santa Rosa del Aguaray, and is incardinated in the Diocese of San Pedro Apóstol. His academic formation is solid and varied: he studied at the National Major Seminary, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Theology from the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina "Santa María de los Buenos Aires" and a licentiate in Pastoral Sciences from the Higher Institute of Theology of the Catholic University "Nuestra Señora de la Asunción."
Between 2012 and 2019, his formative journey took him to three continents. First, he lived in Bolivia, where he studied Biblical Theology at the Catholic University of San Pablo in Cochabamba. Then he traveled to Germany to study at the Faculty of Catholic Theology of the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen. Finally, in Italy, he studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. This international experience has given him a broad perspective of the universal Church.
Pastoral Experience and Service
Throughout his ministry, Father Ramos González has held numerous positions. Among them, his collaboration at the parish of Saint Alphonsus Mary de Liguori in Rome (2016-2019) and his work as a member of the Youth Section of the Latin American Episcopal Council (2007-2010) stand out. Currently, he serves as pastor of San José Obrero in Choré and pastoral vicar of the Diocese of San Pedro Apóstol.
His experience with young people and his training in biblical theology will undoubtedly be a great asset to the Diocese of Concepción, where youth ministry and doctrinal formation are key areas.
A Call to Unity and Hope
The appointment of a new bishop is always a moment of grace for the Church. As the Word of God says in the letter to the Ephesians: "He himself gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ" (Ephesians 4:11-12, CSB).
In this context, the diocesan community of Concepción is called to welcome its new pastor with joy and to support him in his mission. Father Ramos González assumes this responsibility at a time when the Church in Paraguay needs leaders who promote unity, reconciliation, and hope.
Challenges and Opportunities in the Diocese of Concepción
The Diocese of Concepción covers a vast region with rural and urban communities. Among the pastoral challenges are the shortage of priests, the need to strengthen lay formation, and care for the most vulnerable. However, there are also great opportunities: a living faith among the people, a committed laity, and a desire for spiritual renewal.
The new bishop will face these challenges with the grace of God and the support of his presbyterate and faithful. May his ministry be fruitful and bring abundant blessings to the Church in Concepción.
