Nigeria Attacks: 11 Christians Killed by Fulani Herders in Plateau State

As Christians, we are called to remember those who suffer for their faith. The apostle Paul urges us: "Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn" (Romans 12:15, NIV). In this time of mourning, we unite our voices in solidarity and intercession for those who have lost loved ones and for the shaken communities.

Details of the Plateau Attacks

On Sunday, May 3, around 9 p.m., armed men from the Fulani ethnic group attacked the village of Fan, a Christian community in Barkin Ladi district. Five Christians were killed as they were returning home after a day of work. Resident Bot James told Christian Daily International-Morning Star News that the victims were ambushed and shot. Community leader Rwang Tengwong confirmed the attack in a statement, noting that all residents of Fan are Christians.

In the village of Kassa, also predominantly Christian, two Christians were killed on April 27. One victim was identified as Gyang Choji Kim. Meanwhile, on April 19, in the village of Hurum, four Christians lost their lives and five others were injured. Local resident Florence Yohanna described the horror: "May God have mercy and deliver us from the armed Fulani gang. My village, Hurum, was attacked again by Fulani herders; four Christians were killed." The attack occurred around 10 p.m. when the assailants stormed the village and opened fire on residents.

Global Persecution: The Situation of Christians in Nigeria

According to the 2026 World Persecution List from Open Doors, Nigeria remains the country where the most Christians are killed for their faith. Between October 1, 2024, and September 30, 2025, 3,490 Nigerian Christians were killed, representing 72% of the global total of 4,849 deaths. This number marks an increase from 3,100 the previous year. Nigeria ranks 7th on the list of the 50 countries that most persecute Christians.

These data remind us of the urgency to pray and act for our persecuted brothers and sisters. Jesus said: "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world" (John 16:33, NIV). Their faith, even amid violence, is a powerful testimony of Christ's victory.

What Does the Bible Say About Persecution?

The Bible does not promise a life without suffering, but it assures us of God's presence in the midst of difficulties. Psalm 34:19 states: "The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all" (NIV). Furthermore, Jesus declared: "Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5:10, NIV).

Persecution is not a sign of abandonment but an opportunity to experience God's grace deeply. The apostle Peter encourages: "But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened" (1 Peter 3:14, NIV).

How Can We Support Persecuted Christians?

Faced with news like this, we are challenged to act. Here are some practical ways to support our brothers and sisters in Nigeria and around the world:

  • Pray regularly: Dedicate time to intercede for persecuted Christians, asking for protection, strength, and comfort.
  • Spread the word: Share accurate information with your church and community.
