On May 4, nearly two thousand faithful gathered in Pingyang County, within the Diocese of Wenzhou, for the inauguration and consecration of a new church under the patronage of St. Thérèse of Lisieux. The ceremony was presided over by Father Hu Longjian, with the presence of the pastor of Shuitou, Father Lin Shengli, and about twenty diocesan priests. This event marks an important milestone for the Catholic community in this coastal region, home mainly to fishing families.
The new building, built in a simple and sober style, was designed as a place of silence, prayer, and sacramental life. Catholics in Zhaoyang had long wished to place their church under the protection of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face. Many in the community resonate with her spirituality of the "little way," made of humility, trust, and faithfulness in the ordinary gestures of Christian life.
The Spirituality of the "Little Way" at the Heart of the Community
According to the pastor's testimony, Catholics in the region live their faith in simplicity, through daily prayer, mutual support, and modest acts of charity. The figure of St. Thérèse has long accompanied the spiritual life of the faithful, who find in her example a source of inspiration for their daily lives. As the apostle Paul writes: "Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer" (Romans 12:12, ESV). This word resonates particularly in this discreet but fervent community.
A Patronage That Evokes Missionary Zeal
The choice to place this new church under the patronage of St. Thérèse also has a special resonance for the Church in China. Although Thérèse of Lisieux never left her Norman Carmel, she nurtured a deep missionary desire throughout her life. In her writings, she affirms wanting to proclaim the Gospel "in the five parts of the world" and dreams of being a missionary "until the end of time." At the end of the 19th century, China held an important place in Catholic missionary zeal, with many European priests sent to Asia to proclaim the Gospel.
Faith Life in a Context of Simplicity
In this small coastal community, faith is expressed authentically and humbly. The fishing families, who make up the majority of parishioners, find strength in prayer and mutual support to live their daily lives. The Book of Proverbs reminds us: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5, ESV). This trust is at the heart of local spirituality.
The inauguration of this church is also an opportunity to reflect on the place of the Church in contemporary Chinese society. Despite challenges, Christian communities continue to grow and witness to their faith with discretion and perseverance.
A Call to Prayer and Mission
In this season of the year, as the universal Church prepares to celebrate Pentecost, the example of St. Thérèse invites us to rediscover the power of prayer and mission. As she wrote: "I want to spend my heaven doing good on earth." May this new church be a place where God's grace is poured out and where the faithful draw strength to be witnesses of the Gospel in their daily lives.
To go further, let us take a moment to meditate on our own call to holiness in small things. How can we, like St. Thérèse, live our faith with humility and trust, even in the most ordinary gestures? May this inauguration be a source of inspiration for all.
