From April 13 to 17, 2026, the 98 bishops and archbishops who guide the dioceses of Mexico gathered at Casa Lago to celebrate the 120th Plenary Assembly of the Mexican Episcopal Conference. This meeting represents a significant moment in the life of the Catholic Church in the country, where shepherds together seek God's will to face current challenges.

Mexican Bishops Gather in Assembly: Seeking God's Guidance Through Prayer and Discernment

The president of the CEM, Bishop Ramón Castro Castro of Cuernavaca, addressed a warm message to all Mexican Catholics, inviting them to accompany this process with prayer and trust in the Holy Spirit. In his words, he highlighted the importance of collective discernment and unity in the mission that Jesus has entrusted to us.

"From April 13 to 17, all the bishops of Mexico will be gathered in the Plenary Assembly to reflect and discern together about the challenges and opportunities we face as a Church. In this meeting we will raise our prayers to the Lord, seeking the light of the Holy Spirit to guide our decisions"

The pastoral tone of the message reminds us that, as a community of faith, we are called to support our spiritual leaders with constant prayer. Scripture encourages us in this regard: "I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people" (1 Timothy 2:1, NIV).

The Importance of Transparency in the Church

While bishops gather to discern the pastoral path, some journalists specializing in religious matters have expressed concern about the lack of access to information about the assembly's development. Various analyses have noted that these meetings are conducted with security measures that limit contact between bishops and the press.

This situation invites us to reflect on the necessary balance between the privacy required for certain discernments and the transparency that strengthens trust in ecclesiastical institutions. As Christians, we value honesty and openness, remembering Jesus' words: "For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open" (Mark 4:22, NIV).

A Call to Prayer for Our Shepherds

Regardless of different perspectives on transparency in these meetings, as a Christian community we have a fundamental responsibility: to pray for those who guide us spiritually. Bishop Castro Castro made a specific call in this regard, asking the faithful to accompany the process with "fervent prayers."

This invitation echoes the Christian tradition that teaches us to intercede for our leaders. The letter to the Hebrews reminds us: "Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you" (Hebrews 13:17, NIV).

Challenges and Opportunities for the Church in Mexico

The plenary assembly addresses crucial issues for ecclesial life in the current Mexican context. Among the challenges facing the Church are:

  • Evangelization in an increasingly secularized world
  • Pastoral accompaniment for families
  • Formation of new Christian leaders
  • Response to the most urgent social needs
  • Promotion of justice and peace in society

Facing these challenges, bishops seek to discern the action of the Holy Spirit, remembering Jesus' promise: "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever" (John 14:16, NIV).

Ecclesial Communion Beyond Structures

While discussion continues about press access to the assembly, it's important to remember that ecclesial communion transcends visible structures. The unity of the Church is founded on our common faith in Christ and the love that unites us as brothers and sisters. In these days of discernment, let us ask the Lord to strengthen the bonds of communion among all the baptized, so that together we can be credible witnesses of the Gospel in today's world.
