The U.S. Department of Justice has released an extensive report titled Eradicating Anti-Christian Bias within the Federal Government, documenting what many consider a systematic bias against Christians during the previous administration. This over-500-page document has sparked intense debate in the international Christian community, as it exposes practices that, according to the authors, violate the spirit of the First Amendment.
For believers, this news is not just political but deeply spiritual. The Bible reminds us in Romans 13:1 that "all authority comes from God," but also calls us to be light in the darkness (Matthew 5:14). How should the church respond when we feel the state views us with suspicion?
The Five Main Findings of the Report
The report details five key areas where this bias supposedly manifested. Below, we summarize them so you can understand the scope of what has been alleged.
1. Selective Prosecution of Pro-Life Protesters
According to the document, the Justice Department applied the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act disproportionately against Christian activists protesting outside abortion clinics. While other groups with similar stances received lighter penalties, pro-life Christians faced harsher charges and longer sentences.
This calls us to reflect on the call to defend life, as Proverbs 31:8-9 says: "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, defend the rights of the poor and needy." But it also reminds us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12).
2. Surveillance of Churches and Christian Organizations
The report alleges that federal agencies such as the FBI and IRS conducted special monitoring of churches that preached traditional morality, especially those identified as "traditional Catholic." Informants were reportedly used, and prayer groups were infiltrated, creating a climate of distrust.
Jesus warned us in John 15:18: "If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first." But He also called us to be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves (Matthew 10:16).
3. Discrimination in Federal Funding
It documents that Christian organizations applying for funds for social aid programs were systematically rejected or subjected to stricter requirements than other secular organizations. This especially affected ministries working with migrants and the homeless.
Scripture reminds us in James 1:27 that "pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction." We cannot let fear paralyze our mission.
4. Hostility in Public Discourse
The report points out that high-ranking officials used derogatory language toward Christians, labeling them as "extremists" or "fanatics." This created an environment where discrimination seemed justified. Cases are mentioned of federal employees who were sanctioned for expressing their religious beliefs in the workplace.
Peter encourages us in 1 Peter 3:15: "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you for the hope that you have, but do this with gentleness and respect."
5. Manipulation of Educational Policies
Finally, the Department of Education is accused of promoting curricula that excluded or distorted the history of Christianity in the United States, while emphasizing other perspectives. This especially affected Christian schools seeking to maintain their identity.
Proverbs 22:6 instructs us: "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it."
