The liturgy of the Fifth Sunday of Easter invites us to reflect on the community born from the cross and resurrection of Jesus. This community, the Church, is called to live in obedience to God and in total self-giving for the service of others. The path of obedience is not easy, but it is the path Jesus taught us, and through it we find true life.
In the book of Acts, we see how the early Christians lived in fellowship, sharing everything they had and serving one another with joy. This community was marked by obedience to God's Word and a willingness to give themselves completely to their neighbors. This is the model we are called to follow today.
"They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." (Acts 2:42, NIV)
Obedience to God: The Foundation of Christian Life
Obedience to God is the foundation on which we build our faith. It is not blind submission, but a loving response to the love God first showed us. When we obey God, we acknowledge that He knows what is best for us and that His ways are higher than ours.
Jesus Himself set the example of perfect obedience to the Father. In Gethsemane, He prayed: "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done" (Luke 22:42, NIV). This total surrender to God's will is the standard for our lives.
The Fruits of Obedience
When we live in obedience to God, we experience peace and joy, even in the midst of difficulties. Obedience draws us closer to God and makes us channels of His blessings to others. The Bible teaches that obedience is better than sacrifice (1 Samuel 15:22).
Moreover, obedience protects us from sin and its consequences. The psalmist declares: "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you" (Psalm 119:11, NIV).
Total Self-Giving in Service to Others
Serving others is the concrete expression of our love for God. Jesus taught that the greatest commandment is to love God with all our being and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-39). Service is the practical way to demonstrate that love.
In the Christian community, we are called to serve one another with humility and generosity. Each of us receives gifts and talents that should be used for the common good. As the apostle Peter wrote: "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms" (1 Peter 4:10, NIV).
The Example of Jesus, the Servant
Jesus is the greatest example of service. He did not come to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). On the night He was betrayed, He washed the disciples' feet, teaching us that true leaders are those who serve (John 13:14-15).
Christian service is not just an activity but an attitude of the heart. When we serve with love, we imitate Christ and participate in His redemptive work in the world. Every act of service, no matter how small, has eternal value.
Living Out Obedience and Service Daily
How can we apply these principles in our everyday lives? First, we need to cultivate a life of prayer and Bible reading to know God's will and gain strength to obey it. Second, we must be attentive to the needs of those around us and ready to help.
Service can take many forms: from a simple gesture of listening and welcoming to involvement in church ministries or social projects. What matters is that everything is done with love and for God's glory.
"Serve one another humbly in love, for the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" (Galatians 5:13, NIV)
Challenges and Rewards
Serving is not always easy. Sometimes we face fatigue, ingratitude, or lack of resources. Yet the Bible encourages us not to grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up (Galatians 6:9). The reward of service is not only earthly but eternal. Jesus promised that those who serve faithfully will be rewarded in the kingdom of heaven.
May the example of the early Christians and the teaching of Jesus inspire us to live in obedience to God and in joyful service to others. May our community be a reflection of God's love, where every person feels welcomed and valued.
