On International Family Day, May 15, the Foundation for Family Values raises its voice to demand greater societal recognition for the unpaid caregiving work done primarily by mothers. At a time when families are under pressure, it is more important than ever to honor the daily devotion of mothers and create policy frameworks that make their lives easier.
The foundation emphasizes that mothers often work in the shadows: they care for children, tend to sick relatives, and keep the household running—often without financial security or social recognition. Therefore, Family Day should not only be a celebration of family but also an occasion to reflect on structural injustices.
“Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” (Deuteronomy 5:16, NIV)
This biblical commandment reminds us that the family is a central place of care and blessing. But how can we honor mothers today? The foundation proposes concrete measures: more workplace flexibility, paid parental leave, and better childcare infrastructure.
The Role of Mothers in the Bible
Scripture is full of strong mothers who shaped history through their dedication and faith. Sarah, Rebekah, Hannah, and Mary are examples for us. Their stories show that mothers are not only responsible for physical care but also provide spiritual guidance and comfort.
Particularly inspiring is the example of Hannah, who cried out to God in her distress and dedicated her child to Him (1 Samuel 1). Her prayer and faithfulness were rewarded. Also, Mary, the mother of Jesus, embodies humble and courageous surrender to God's plan. In Luke 1:38, she says, “I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said.” This attitude of readiness is a model for all mothers.
Mothers as Spiritual Teachers
In Proverbs 31, the capable wife is described, who leads her family with wisdom and diligence. “She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue” (Proverbs 31:26, NIV). Mothers have a unique opportunity to pass on the faith to their children and raise them in the love of God.
The Foundation for Family Values underscores that this spiritual dimension of motherhood is often overlooked, yet it is essential for the well-being of the next generation. “A mother who instructs her children in faith lays the foundation for a life under God's blessing,” says a foundation spokesperson.
Improving Social Conditions
In addition to spiritual and emotional support, mothers need practical help. Therefore, the foundation calls for:
- Valuing care work through tax relief and pension credits.
- More flexible work models that allow for work-family balance.
- Paid parental leave for both parents to share the load equitably.
- Expansion of childcare places, especially for young children.
These measures are not just political wishes but correspond to the biblical command of loving one's neighbor. By supporting mothers, we strengthen the whole family and thus society.
The Significance of International Family Day
International Family Day, established by the United Nations on May 15, aims to raise awareness of the importance of the family. This year's theme is “Families and Sustainable Development.” The Foundation for Family Values uses this occasion to highlight the indispensable role of mothers.
