In April of this year, Hesse Evangelical University began operations. This new educational institution emerged from the merger of CVJM University Kassel with Evangelical University Darmstadt. With approximately 1,650 students, the university begins its work, incorporating 437 students from the former CVJM University. All staff, faculty, and study programs from both previous institutions are now part of this new entity.
Support Structure and Shared Responsibility
Hesse Evangelical University is jointly supported by the Evangelical Regional Churches of Kurhessen-Waldeck and Hessen-Nassau, the youth association CVJM Germany, and the State of Hesse. All four supporting organizations are represented on the board of trustees and share financial obligations. The State of Hesse assumes approximately 70 percent of the costs, according to available information.
Academic Programs and Educational Focus
The university offers a total of 14 study programs with various degrees, as well as continuing education opportunities. The main emphases are particularly in the areas of Social Work, Religious and Community Pedagogy, Childhood Education, and Nonprofit Management. Several research institutes complement the institution's academic profile.
"Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name." (Psalm 86:11 NIV)
Locations and Future Development
Initially, the three existing locations in Darmstadt, Schwalmstadt-Treysa, and Kassel will remain. However, a new campus will be developed in Treysa that will include modern teaching spaces as well as student housing. In fall 2027, the former CVJM University will relocate there. From that point forward, the previous tuition fees will also be eliminated.
Spiritual Life and Holistic Education
The new campus includes an enhanced pedagogical concept that connects living and learning. Spiritual offerings, coaching, and counseling are integral components of this approach. A CVJM support association will be engaged on campus and accompany students, as explained by Tobias Faix, former rector of CVJM University.
The Vision of the Supporting Organizations
Hans-Jörg Kopp, General Secretary of CVJM Germany, emphasizes in a press release: "The educational work of CVJM with its innovative, missionary, intercultural heartbeat and the concept of shared living and learning continues at Hesse Evangelical University."
President Ulrike Scherf of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau explains: "The supporting organizations foster—from their specific perspectives, ethically oriented, spiritually shaped, and religiously sensitive—attitudes that contribute to successful, solidary, and democratic coexistence."
"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds." (Hebrews 10:24 NIV)
Leadership Structure and Academic Continuity
President of the new university is Uwe Becker, who previously led Evangelical University Darmstadt. Professors from both former institutions belong to the leadership bodies and committees of the new entity, ensuring continuity and exchange of experience.
Biblical Perspectives on Education and Community
The Bible emphasizes in many places the importance of wisdom and knowledge. In the book of Proverbs it says: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction." (Proverbs 1:7 NIV). Christian educational institutions have the special task of not only transmitting specialized knowledge but also promoting spiritual values.
The connection between academic excellence and spiritual life reminds us of the apostle Paul's holistic approach, who exhorted believers to be transformed by the renewing of their minds (Romans 12:2). This new university seeks to embody that principle, forming competent professionals who are also committed servants in their communities.
